I'm looking for recommendations for what mag to buy for shooting off the bench. I only have 30 rounders and the banana clip interferes with getting low on a rest. I'm searching for a quality 5 round flush mag or something of that sort.

All input is appreciated...BEWW

Have you tried a 20rd mag, they seem to work out just fine for most.

I've got an old colt 20rnd mag that I use from the bench. You may be able to find a 5 round hunting mag that will work for you.

Take a minute and remove this from your vocabulary: "banana clip"

I use 20 round mags.

I have 20rnd PMags and while others have had some issues, mine have been trouble free. From the bench, it isn't a big issue anyway. YMMV.

why not use 5 round mags? www.midwayusa.com has them and i got mine thru amazon.com

they fit, nearly, flush with the bottom of the mag well...

I have plenty of 20rd pmags, but I also have had good luck with the handful of c-products 20rd magazines with magpul followers that I have. You can find them around the internet for around $9.

I have a C Products 20 rnd mag with grey magpul followers that I use for bench shooting.

I know some people don't like C Products though.

Sorry Gents, didn't realize BC wasn't PC. Guess it was a generational thing.

A 20rd GI mag doesn't protrude as much as the pistol grip. A 20rd PMag only slightly more than the GI. Five and ten round mags are available, but they are of questionable quality and performance.

The only flush 5 rounders I've found thus far are by Promag, are they junk? They cost more than a Pmag.

I use 20 round Colt aluminum mags that came with the rifle when shooting from the bench, any other times I use 30 round PMAGs.

well since the smart@55 comments got made already I guess I left with having to give hopefully helpful info :( :D

bushmaster has (or had) decent 5 round magazines. I have one from a few years ago and have never had an issue with it. Can't speak to current production, mine are pre Remington buy out.

even still, your just talking about shooting from the bench... you might look into one of these.

of course a good quality 20 rounder will work just fine too as has been suggested already a few times in this thread.

Colt makes a quality 9-round magazine. If you want one specifically for shooting off the bench, that's what I'd buy.

like others have said, 20 round GI mags work great on the bench without having to reload too often. I prefer NHMTG mags.

I've been searching the net and Sportsmans Warehouse carries this mag. We have one locally, think I'll go take a look tomorrow.

I use a 10 rnd mag for the bench. Got it from .44MAG.com.
Has been flawless thru many many rounds. Was about $10 or so, iirc.

I have only bought a couple mags from ProMag but have had a failure rate of 50%. That seems to be about the norm for ProMag stuff.

20 round PMAGS work. Despite my distain for Bushmaster, they have quality 10 round steel magazines.

NHMTG makes magazines for Colt, as does OKAY. These three MFGs sell the BEST 20rd magazines on the market. NHMTG 20rd mags from 44Mag are my magazine preference.

44mag.com seems to have some very good deals, thanks for the hook-up. Anybody try the ASC stainless mags? It appears that the 10 round and 5 round versions are the same housing size, would this be correct?

A 5 can be made from a 10, as a true 5 round would be up in the magwell somewhere unaccessable without an even larger floorplate (which they do make) than what the 10 requires.

There are also 5 and 10 round mags made from basically plugged 20 and 30 round magazines.

2 cents:
I wouldn't frig with any type steel magazine unless it was specifically the old and difficult to obtain UK version, which you wouldn't use anyway because its a 30 round body.

I favour a 10 for the bench

I have a 5rd Bushmaster mag that I use.

Same here and no issues at all. Also have a 10 rounder that has been great.

Lancer L5 has a compact 10 rounder. If these are as tough as the 30's I have they should be gtg...

10-round mags fit about flush.

You don't want a 5-round mag unless you're going hunting or something...

I had bad luck with 20rd PMags recently. I purchased them new about a year ago and they worked fine for about 600-700 rounds, but then one day I had a couple complete fail-to-feed. It behaved as if the mag wasn't even in the gun when it cycled--but it was toward the end of the mag. It happened twice that day and I stopped using them.

I tried some Lancer L5AWM translucent smoke 20 round mags and they seem to work fine, but time will tell--so far I have about 200-300 rounds through the 3 that I have.

I also have some Colt 20 rounders I will try eventually too.

I would stay away from the 20rd PMags, personally.

Personally, having owned 8-9 20rd PMAGs, Ive never had an issue with mine. With that said, while the general consensus says they are still being wonky, I would stay away unless you get a great deal. Most are reporting that the 20rd PMAGs fail to lock the bolt on empty, so if you can snag one for under $10 then they should be fine for bench shooting. Just my opinion.

Just an update, I did receive my 10 rnd ACS mag from .44Mag. Thus far I'm very pleased, perfect size, excellent function, just what I was looking for to shoot off the bench and on the range.

Thanks Gents for the hook-up...BEWW
