View Full Version : Brass Deflector Wear ?

I recently picked up a Daniel Defense V3 and took it to the range today to get it zeroed in. I've used Colts and Bushmasters at work and the DD is the first AR I've owned.

I only put a few rounds through it and noticed that the brass deflector has some decent finish wear at the base of it where it meets the back of the ejection port. There is a vertical line where the finish has been gauged away.

My question is if this is normal? I expected wear to this part but didn't think it wear to this point in such a manner. I expected brass markings and some dings but not this soon as in only about 100 rds.

I did try the search function but couldn't find anything that addresses this question. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Post a picture. Brass marking up the deflector is normal but it shouldn't be wearing through the anodizing to the raw aluminum after 100 rounds.

Wonder if the dust cover scraped it off

I'll try and get a picture or 2 up tomorrow when I get my hands on a camera and figure out how to get pictures up on the forum.

How bad would the anodizing coming off be?

No biggie. It's gonna get banged up good, its a brass deflector.

Shoot the gun and treasure every spot of raw aluminum.

Unless there's a lot of pitting I'd say don't worry about it. It's not a moving part afterall. As long as it is there it will continue to deflect brass.

^^^^ LOL

seems a little "quick" to be wearing, but its gonna happen... no way around it

I have a BCM upper that shows similar wear to what you describe. It showed up quickly like yours but hasn't gotten worse. If I'm reading you right you're talking about the sharp edge at the base of the deflector? The sharp edges are always going to wear the fastest. Not a big deal. Some of the brass may even rub off onto the aluminum covering it that way.;)

I have wear on my VLTOR upper on my SPR... who cares... its a tool, not a museum show piece.

Shoot it and Enjoy it!

My upper did the same thing.
Brass hits the base of the deflector/back of ejection port, not the angled area of the deflector.

Brass ejects at about 2 O'clock no matter the buffer weight.

It has to do with ejector/extractor tension and where the bolt face ends up when its fully retracted ( probably even with, or behind the ejection port.

I have had no problems because of it.

I appreciate the replies. I took 2 pictures but I can't get them posted. I'll keep trying. I'm not concerned if the wear is normal. I bought the DD to run hard. I just wanted to make sure the wear was not anything abnormal. I'm fully prepared to accept my Overreacting Noob Question of the Day award if this is nothing to be concerned about.

If your talking about something like this, which is on my v7, I would concur with the previous posts and encourage you to go shoot the hell out of it!

For the sake of comparison, here is my Bushmaster:

Both of these rifles function flawlessly. You didn't report on the function of your v3, so I'm guessing that it functioned without any issues. DD makes a fine rifle. Enjoy it!

That's it exactly. My is a little less scratched up. I also found some BCM's in the picture thread that have the same wear. I guess I should get some more ammo and "make it look mean".

AUplainsman, thanks for the pictures. No malfuncitions to report. Accuracy was very good. How many rounds through yours?

OP, are you shooting steel case? I've seen a brand new receiver get down to the metal in one mag of Silver Bear. Usually, wear is normal. A pic would help. That said, I've had receivers with over 2K rds through them, with only brass marks.

Use some Aluma-Black if it grates on your OCD, not that I would know anything about that.

My v7 is brand new and its only got 50 rounds through it so far, all brass cased. I just picked up a case of XM193 and can't wait to put it through the paces!
My Bushmaster has about 450 rounds through it (both brass and steel), but I couldn't tell you when markings first appeared.

No steel case ammo through the rifle yet. I put 50 rds of AE 55 grn .223 and 15 rds of XM193 through it. I keep a log of all the rounds through this gun. I checked my log tonight and found I estimated high on my round count.

The wear appeared towards the end of my shooting session.

Overreacting Noob Question of the Day award

Everybody's got 'em, and there's no desire to stifle them, entirely, however...

It's preferred that members conduct a Search before starting a new thread; everybody WANTS to think that they're the first cat, ever, to ask a given question, and that's rarely the case.

For example, take the title you gave this thread, punch it into the orange Search button at the top of the page, and you get quite a few hits: https://www.m4carbine.net/gtsearch.php?cx=003496919632624929056%3Adhiwgm0hbaa&cof=FORID%3A10&ie=UTF-8&q=Brass+Deflector+Wear+&sa=Search&siteurl=www.m4carbine.net%2Fforumdisplay.php%3Ff%3D3&ref=www.m4carbine.net%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D109292&ss=

Grey Search button, single keyword of "deflector," limited to thread titles and to the AR/M4 subforums nets an even more focused selection: https://www.m4carbine.net/search.php?searchid=4569048

The puddy-tat-gun makes for a nice, logical stopping point, too....
