Cool paint job. I used to shoot a Shilen DGA with a light varmint contour barrel chambered in .220 Swift. I do sort of miss the hot rod, but I standardized on .223 Rem. quite awhile ago. The 50 grain Speers I shot literally exploded crows.

Nice!
What type of stock is that, and who did the work?

It is a Factory stock for the 40X. It had a black pebble grain finish and I got tired of it so, I had a friend of mine paint it. He paints helmets for NHRA and F1 drivers.

So you are saying that your buddy hit a PD in the face with the first round fired out of his unzeroed .50 at Two Thousand Meters?

2k without a zero, I wish my R700ltr would have done that at 200 yards.

Sorry, I guess a little misleading by the "DONE THAT". No that was about 125 yd. He had never shot it yet and I was saying you better hurry up or I will take that first shot for you. His brother took it to Colorado and was hitting a 4x8 sheet of plywood @ 1 mile. It was a cheep scope that came with it that was not really built for the recoil. It's amazing how much energy is behind that caliber. FUN TOO.

The gun I have had the most fun hunting groundhogs with is a 10/22. Stomping along a treeline watching for the chubby bastards to start running back in from eating beans. Takes a few shots sometimes but you can hear them hitting.

I have killed an absurd amount of semi-retarded semi-suburban raccoons and possums with a 17HMR, great little round for taking them out.

The coolest damned round I used was a .257 Wby, pushing 87gr Barnes right around 4000fps. It made a 15-20 pound groundhog look like a prairie dog that just took a 22.250

i have a ton of fun with my Anshutz MPR & CZ452 doing the same. It's a good way to kill a morning w/shots out to 125m. After I wipe them out I move to the 5.56 SPR w/can for a while & then back to the close ones.

just the AK brother, that there Short Dot came from one very cool lawyer from CT. Your old one is on my noveske recon.

And for those critters closer than can of beef stew engagement range, this thing is the poop. Ruger Charger 10-22 pistola. I slapped an el-cheapo BSA RDS on it and proceeded to slay ground squirrels at my bro's house. Much fun and very accurate...go forth and buy one. Im gonna slap a LER pistol scope on mine next time i get home.

how is the trigger on the Charger ? A lot of the 10-22 rifles have horrible triggers.

Scattergun,
its manageable but could use a little work. Good enough to hit ground squirrels at 100 to 125 yards with a 5 MOA red dot sight. After glass im planning on tricking this thing out with some trigger upgrades but it works fine as is.

Hey scattergun;
My right arm, 9well maybe my neighbors right arm) for such a rifle.
The 40X and the mod. 52 would be a dream come true. Especially if I could have to 40X in my favorite caliber.

Yes I shoot mostly prairie dog and yotes. Throw in a few badgers and a bobcat orr two and it makes my year. I go back to the ranch in Wy to visit my son, daughter-in-law and my grandbabies and at the same time get in two to four days of shooting. I have some medical problems which preclude my shooting anything with a heavy recoil any more so I build or shoot the 22 calibers almost exclusively.
I have the Blaser LRS2 with .223 and 22-250 barrels and the Ruger #1 in 22-250 that are my basic Pdog guns now. I do have a 257 Rob. that I have loaded some 75 Gr ballistic tips for at about 3100 fps which is a mild but very flat shooting round with the same or near the same recoil as my 22 cals.

Where do you guys go to shoot your varmints. Is it possible to get some of us interested enough to meet where there is unlimited shooting in wide open, free BLM or RR sections to shoot.
just a thought but so many times we meet and talk about our stuff and never get to meet in person with an activity that all would or could participate and enjoy what we all love best.

Food for thought and I hope this is just an extension of your thread and not hijacking. If I did so, please accept my apology and I could begin a new thread.
You see I am fairly new to forums and especially to computers and I do not understand all of the ethics of posting or replying to a post.

the vast majority of my shooting is done in pasture fields. The farmers here hate groundhogs. They dig holes all over the place. I also shoot them out of gardens.

Ruger 10/22 receiver
Green Mountain 20" Stainless Steel Fluted Barrel
Power Custom Hammer
Hogue Overmold Stock
Harris Bipod
Power Custom Scope Rail
Burris Signature Zee Scope Rings
Mueller APV 4.5-14x Scope

I just put this together the other day after a bunch of research. Can't wait to see what it'll do to the tree rats :D

The Power Custom Hammer is drop in and lightens up the pull a good bit... 2.5-3lbs after its in. Makes for a cheap but effective upgrade.

bought my son a 10-22 a few years ago, great gun to shoot for pennies. little critters beware. Ruger out did themselves with that gun. Dead on at 100 yds with a $30 scope.

That is a very nice paint job, as well as the "flamed" one that was posted later in the thread. You guys are definitely some serious shooters.

I have a Rem597 in 17HMR that I use for the little annoyances around here. I know this a bolt gun forum, but it sorta is since it jambs nearly every round. Its a decent shooter, but the trigger is too heavy for real tight shots.
I think my neighbor and I finally killed off the groundhogs close to home. He shoots a bull barrel Savage 17hmr. Havent seen any in the garden this year. I am trying to hunt one at my grandfathers under the old tractor shed. He shot at him a couple times with the 12ga, but at 50yds+ all he was doin was putting holes in the side of the shed.(lots of holes:D ) He called me to come down, but every time I go with the rifle the groundhog wont come out. I'll get a shot at him eventually.

I do my killin with a NEF Handi Rifle chambered in .204 Ruger with a BSA Panther scope. Follow ups are a little slow due to the break action, but it has yet to stop a coyote with one shot!:D

Try shooting yotes in the head and i think you will get more 1 shot stops;)
