View Full Version : Carbine Rail Mounting Options

I'm trying to decide which direction to take this SIG516 with 7.5" rail. I'm not a big fan of a carbine length rail, as I can't really reach far out like I can with my other AR with a 12" rail like I'm used to. Changing the rail to something longer is NOT an option as this is a proprietary rail on a piston system. I'm sure way down the road there will be options in length.

I would like to mount a light. I own a Surefire X300 and a tactical flashlight with a great angled mount that hugs the rail in close (11 & 1 o'clock). Both have the options of a tapeswitch if needed. Trying to think of the best possible location for a light on such a short rail. There are SO MANY possibilities that I was hoping that someone with more experience could suggest which light should go where. I do know that I do not want a light at the 6 o'clock position. The 12 o'clock position is also not an option due to the heat generated on the gas block of this piston system (I can't put Magpul BIUS on there b/c they would melt). Tapeswitch at 12 o'clock on rail (behind gas block and sights)? No tapeswitch at all and just use the controls on the light? Endless possibilities. I have the equipment, just can't decide where to put it.

Then there's the matter of gripping the rifle. I DO know I want to keep my hand away from the piston gas block. Don't want to burn my hand. With the rail being only 7.5", is a vertical grip the best option (attach tapeswitch to it?)? Maybe just a hand stop? From browsing the forums I do know that the Magpul AFG is NOT recommended on a carbine length rail. I don't think I could grab the rail Chis Costa style due to the length (lack there of).

Do you run your stock fully extended? "Chris Costa style" is Chris Costa's style, what works for DontCome2MyHouse's style?

A good carbine course will probably do more for your shooting skills than a longer rail system.

Just sayin'... especially in your situation, it may become impossible to get a longer rail without going to a DI system. If I were you and I was stuck on getting another rail system first, I would take measurements of the inside of the top rail and compare those measurements against other rails until you found one that worked.

I want to go with the rail I got (7.5"). Other rails are not an option at this point as no one makes anything.

I'm not a very big guy and may arms are short. I keep the stock almost fully collapsed. I have a fixed 4X optic and the eye relief is about 1.5". This is another reason I need the stock collapsed.

haley strategic drop wing or thorntail light mounts will be the best option for such a short rail. Mounting an AFG at the very end of the rail will allow you to extend your hand an inch or two more than you would be able to without it. It will look funny, but i have seen it done before and it works.

Is there a way to mount a tapeswitch to a rail that isn't Surefire brand without velcro?

I took the plunge and bought the Magpul AFG and to my surprise it actually works very well for ME on a carbine length rail. I guess b/c I have a very short reach. Lucky me.
