View Full Version : Question about Glocks I've never seen asked before

Just how deep into the frame do the steel rails go?

Not that it's a big deal, but I've always been curious as to what the "skeleton" of the Glock frame looks like.

Apparently the front rails may forum some sort of "U" that follows the contour of the dust cover, but I can't confirm that.

I guess what got me curious about this is that in every kaBoom photo you see, the pistol always seems to hold together at the rear, leading me to believe that maybe the rear rails are part of a larger block going down into the frame. That's just a guess, though.

Anyway, I've just always been curious.

I'm not really certain these will help. Can you see any indication at all in these pics?

Hey doc. A friend of mine actually got to see one and he said it was less than a quarter inch. If his data is correct using MK 1 MOD 0 eyeball. Now he did not elaborate how it was attached or the exact configuration of it.

I'm curious myself if someone has done exact measurements.

A friend of mine actually got to see one and he said it was less than a quarter inch.

So it goes 1/4 inch into the frame past what's visible, right?

I've seen those X-rays before. I almost made one my avatar. :D

No. This was three years ago, but he said the whole rail IIRC. He is usually a straight shooter (ha) but the more I think about it...

Wish I knew for sure. Damnit now I really have to know. Doc, have you already googled it? Let me start searching.

Doc, have you already googled it? Let me start searching.

I've Googled it several times in several different ways. I Googled Glock rails, Glock cutaway, Glock x-ray, Glock kaboom, Glock frame skeleton, and more.

It's understandable that Glock might want to keep this a trade secret, and it's understandable that in the world of manufacturing they would imbed as little steel as needed into the polymer to keep the costs down.

It's just always been an obsession of mine since I bought my first Glock years ago to find out just how much of a steel skeleton is under that plastic.

I would have thought by now that some enterprising person who had a kaboom would have melted the plastic down to see what the rails look like underneath.

It looks to me like the front does go around the dust cover and the rear is about 1/2 inch from those xray pictures.

I found this.

It appears to clearly show a cross-section of a steel insert on the part of backstrap that rides above the web of your hand. There is no indication of course if that is connected to the rear frame rails.

I have wondered this several times, & searched google just as you have OP. Someone needs to xray a frame stripped from the slide, in various angles.

First time posting pics on this site. I'm hoping this is a success.

Take a look and see what you think. Without knowing anything for certain, it appears that the rears may be deeply embedded in the grip frame.
