I believe Jonathan Blunk should be awarded the Medal of Honor for his swift thinking and selfless act on the night of July 20, 2012.

He had taken an oath to defend this nation from all enemies both foreign and domestic, and he gave his life upholding this tradition while engaged by a domestic enemy... regardless if he was currently not active duty, he had served 3 tours in the middle east and had the intention of reenlisting.

I believe his citation should read something like this:

"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as Boyfriend and father of two. On the night of July 20th, 2012, Blunk was conducting an R&R mission in the town of Aurora, Colorado, when small arms fire erupted approximately 5 meters to the front of his position. Blunk immediately and without regard for his own well being made the conscious decision to provide cover for his female companion by any means necessary. As the ambushing party advanced, Blunk quickly began to receive enemy fire. Presented with no alternatives and little time to act, Blunk covered his female companion with his own body in efforts to shield her from incoming fire. In an ultimate and selfless act of bravery in which he was mortally wounded, he saved the life of at least one fellow moviegoer. By his undaunted courage, intrepid fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty, Jonathan Blunk gallantly gave his life for the well being of another, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."

The actions of Jonathan Blunk is not in the true spirit of what the Congressional Medal of Honor was intended for and while I believe he is a hero in every sense of the word if you base his actions against the thousands of heroic acts that police, fire and military personal do on almost a daily basis then everyone would deserve the same recognition which would water down the true meaning of the CMH.

Medals don't make hero's, actions due and Jonathan Blunk's selfless act will be remembered in the pages of history forever.

The Soldier's Medal / Navy and Marine Corps Medal would be appropriate here. It is the highest class of medal awarded to service members for valor while not engaged in armed conflict.

His actions were courageous, but he in no way qualifies for the CMH.

Actually, he doesn't even qualify for these as he was a veteran of the Navy and not currently serving in any capacity (except possibly IRR, which I'm fairly certain doesn't count).

Yeah, I was just saying that if he could get a medal, the Soldier's Medal / Navy and Marine Corps Medal would be the appropriate one. I wasn't sure what his status was. Either way, he's definitely a hero in every sense of the word, regardless of whether he gets any official recognition.

I'm sorry that Jonathan Blunk was killed at the hands of a madman in that theater at Aurora, CO. Without any intention to discredit him or marginalize his death, there are a lot more Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines who are more deserving of consideration for the Medal of Honor or any other medal for selfless acts of courage under fire out there.

I applaud him and the others who took action to save those around them. But I certainly would believe that they are more deserving of medals had they rushed this criminal and stopped him entirely.

These men should be honored for their final acts. But let us not dishonor the ones who had received the Medal of Honor by declaring what they did against overwhelming odds to be on par with what they did in that theater. Individuals as Alvin York, Audie Murphy, Joe Foss, Jim Brady, and the others deserve better than that. JM2CW.
