Was out hog hunting tonight on my stand in the backyard and three nice boars were about 75 yards out from me and I was about to pull the trigger on them when I saw another thermal register in the far off distance and lo and behold it was a lone coyote sneaking in.

I first picked up the coyote and recognized it as a coyote @ 350 yards and waited until it came in for about two minutes with the hogs rooting up in front of me.

Let the coyote have a Barnes 70 grain TSX at 200 yards and knocked him down, he got back up and shot him down for good.

The hogs all let out a good squeal and headed out to the swamp.

The ACOG 4X32 TA02 and FLIR T-50 thermal is a really sweet night hunting setup, very pleased with the performance of the thermal instrument and the ACOG optic!;)

Here is a 7.5MB WMV video of the coyote kill:

As you can see in the video, it was a difficult quartering shot to make both times @ 200 yards, the FLIR Thermal and ACOG is a very nice combo though....

Here is a day pic for reference, my game cam tree is that 50 foot oak tree in the far right hand upper quadrant of the photo:

Good job as usual. You've been getting quite a few 'yotes lately. How many per month on an average and how often do you get out to hunt?

SkyPup

I usually get two or three per month on my property, but see about ten times that amount, wish I had my rifle on me more often.

I do manage to go out whenever I have some spare time though to try to thin the vermin out....

That is a pretty serious set-up for yotes..

What do you have in your optic setup if you don't mind?

Thanks to the good folks at FLIR Commercial Systems and TNVC, I was able to get a new FLIR LS-64 Thermal Scanner to compliment our well used PS-32 scanner.

Currently, the LS-64 is being charged up, but here are some pics before we take them both out hog hunting this weekend to run a functional comparison on the two instruments.

LS-64 = 640X512 = 327,680 OLED Pixels

PS-32 = 320X240 = 76,800 OLED Pixels

The OLED pixels are what you are actually seeing in the viewfinder, so you can easily see the increase in total resolution.

The LS64 is an increase in 4X+ resolution over the PS32, not to mention it also has a 35mm lens instead of a 19mm lens, so for twice the price you are getting 4X+ the range and resolution.

Functional analysis report to come after the hunt Saturday night.

Now that I got to try it out initially for a couple of hours last night my first impressions are that I like it very much!:D

First off, it has no lighted buttons on it like the PS-32, all the buttons remain totally dark and unlite. The exterior is the exact same size and dimension as the PS-32, except that the objective germanium lens is 35mm instead of 19mm, everything else externally is the same, including the same size ocular OLED.

When turning on the LS-64 there is no external light or way to know that it is on until you look through the ocular. It has the same five minute automatic turn off as the PS-32 does if no buttons are pressed in five minutes to save battery power.

Looking through the ocular OLED, it has about 4X more higher resolution, everything is in much more focus and stands out much more clearer with little to no "fuzz", also moving the LS-64 gives virtually zero lag in video frame drops or hangups due to the increased 30Hz frame rate over the PS-32s 7Hz frame rate. The same auto NUC happens with about the same frequency as the focal plane array is reset to a mono-temperature.

On the LS-64 the 2X internal magnification gives virtually zero distortion and is very clear and powerful, much more so than the PS-32 is at 2X. At 4X the LS-64 is still very strong and easy to identify raccoons, rabbits, deer, possums, foxes, etc. at 300 yards. The Red Alert feature is also much stronger as it lights up animals at 2X-4X the range that it does on the PS-32. Another kewl function on the LS-64 is that you can infinitely adjust the magnification from 1X up through about 6x by holding down the magnification button. If you push the button it will shift from 1X to 2x to 4X and back to 1X again. But if you hold the magnification button down it will automatically infinitely increase from 1X up to 6X or so and back down again, a very nice precise feature.

The Brightness Adjustment is the same as the PS-32 with five levels. If you hold down the brightness button for more than one second the 5mW Red Laser comes on, it is pretty powerful for a red laser and easy to see with the naked eye out past 250 yards at night.

I will use both of these thermal scanners on a hog hunt Saturday night and report back how well they functioned, supposed to be high pressure and freezing temps this weekend.

The increase in resolution and detail is stunning, I can easily tell the difference between a raccoon and a rabbit at 350 yards, major increase in clarity enough to ID many more critters in pitch dark.

I could be persuaded to hold onto your "old" equipment every time you upgrade.

Wouldn't want you to get all bogged down in that stuff when you have serious hunting to do...

Hey, what can I say, I'm just a helpful sort of guy.

Seriously though, keep posting as the info. is top notch and much appreciated.

The LS64 has 4X the numbers of pixels that the PS-32 has, which increases its clearness and resolution by a factor of 4. It also has a much more expensive 35mm germanium lens instead of the 19mm lens of the PS-32. The combination of increased microbolometer and increased lens diameter greatly increases the range, resolution, detail, and detection of the LS-64 over the PS-32.

With that said, if you need to detect any animal out to 300 yards, the PS-32 will do that real good for you.

Using the LS-64 at that range, you will not only be able to detect those animals but most likely identify the animal species.

If you have access to large sections (hundreds of acres) of open unobstructed space, the LS-64 will increase your range considerably, otherwise stick with the PS-32.

This morning before dawn I compared the PS-32 to the LS-64 while scoping out my coyote bait pile with the thermals..

The LS-64 has a very noticeable increase in resolution and clarity out to 350 yards (max distance I could see this morning) and the 2X magnification has zero image degradation making it very clear at that range. The 4X magnification has some image degradation but is still very good.

The PS-32 worked fine at 350 yards too with a little less clarity than the LS-64 but not bad, however at 2X magnification the PS-32 loses allot of clarity. You can still detect things @ 350 yards without any problem but you can no longer ID them.

With the LS-64 at 350 yards on 4X I can tell the difference between a squirrel, a raccoon, an armadillo, and a possum, with the PS-32 they all look alike.

With the LS-64 @ 350 yards I can easily tell the difference between a deer, hog, or coyote, with the PS-32 I know they are there but I do not know what they are.

An example of that is this bobcat that I first detected across a 225 yard clearing about 75 yards deep (300 yards out) into the forest canopy before he ever came out into the open. I detected him about two minutes before I ID'ed him and shot him at 190 yards using the LS-64:

The PS-32 has a 19mm lens and the LS-64 has a 35mm lens.

There is a software update for the FLIR PS32 that allows you to toggle the back lights off on your buttons, it also it allows you to adjust the amount of time it takes for the auto shut off to kick in definable up to 5000 seconds!

https://flir.box.com/s/s9hqyuesr945k0bjhqem

You have some options in the Cayman software installation, such as InstaAlert, Marine Red, Back Lights, Time of operation in seconds before auto shutdown.

Just click check the ones that you wish to install, ie click the BackLight box and it will turn it off.

The Cayman file is the update file. Select SW Update, then browse for the cayman file and install it. after you do that, open the configuration button and you will see it.

There are 2 files you need to download at the link. one is a .zip file and the other is the .dfu file.

Unzip the zip file and run Setup. let it load all the drivers, this takes some time.

Plug the cable into your Flir and PC and power it on

Click the SW Update button

Click Browse and find the Cayman file and click Install

Click Configuration button and you will see the boxes for the various options, including back lights off, check that box and install.
