What do you guys think to be the best non rail style (not sure the proper term) handguards?

To clarify are you talking about a drop in non free float, free float tube, or a modular set up such as the Troy alpha/sampson evo/Noveske NSR?

noveske NSR or seekins SP3R

If you are on a budget and need a top rail, Midwest Industries SS or Troy alpha rail.

You won't find a lot of complaints about the Magpul MOE handguards, and they are about 1/3rd of the price... which is significant, when you're talking about a handguard that does absolutely nothing except guard your hands from heat...

+1 on the Magpul moe hand guard. They are an outstanding product, and if you decide to put some rails on in the future just buy some magpul rails and your good to go.

I prefer the stock double shielded style but the Moe is comfy to say the least.

The Magpul MOE is really tough to beat. Its lightweight, modular and priced right.

Another option is the Strike Industries MITCH, it nice to have a built in hand stop and you wont have the exact same forend as everyone else at the range.

And there is nothing wrong with a good double heat shield 'GI' style.

Another vote for the MOE. Great price and you can attach rails later on if you wish. Also since they are cheap if you wish to upgrade to free float later your not out a lot of cash.

Another vote for the MOE. It's not a rail by any means but you can effectively attach a light and or VFG.

When compared to other plastic handguards, it takes a HUGE lead IMHO.

I do like the MOE, more so when you are looking at mounting a sling mount, VG, and light, options are nice, though a true rail system is easier. Have an old carbine with the standard carbine handguards that works nice as well, have a friend who loves playing with it because it is so small and light weight. For budget they both work good, the MOE though I think offer better options.

I have MOE gear on my AR and love it.

I went with the MOE also, to me it was more ergonomic than a standard handguard. All I would ever mount to my AR is a light so a short rail attachment worked perfect for me.

MOE for non free float and Troy Alpha for freefloat.

IMO right now... for non-railed any material

stock/car < MOE < Rainier branded Samson EVO < Noveske NSR

With honorable mention to Wilson's TRIM. I would place it above the Rainier branded Samson rail, but it's expensive (about twice the cost or so), for the the same cost I think Noveske's NSR is a better product.

The MOE is nice in cost and in theory, but it's heavy when decked out compared to aluminum.

I'll beat the horse.....MOE handguards. I run them on my AR, stippled the front 1/3, mounted a TLR-1, VFG, and MOE sling adapter. Nice lightweight package. I also like the handstop. It fits my hand perfect.

and Troy Alpha for freefloat.

Why do you say that? I was looking at Midwest Ind Gen 2 FF

Another one for the MOE for a plastic handguard. With all the options available you don't even need to add rails to mount a light and/or a QD sling.

I just ordered a composite handguard from Alexander Arms that is smooth but can have rails added to it. I haven't received it yet utility have heard good reviews on it and it's supposed to be one of the lightest available. Here is what it looks like:

After researching on here...and not wanting to spend unnecessary money or add unnecessary weight...I went with a Magpul MOE on my first AR. I think I made the right decision.

This is what I used for a long time. I had the older TRX extreme before I upgraded to the Alpha. They now make alot accessories for the Alpha. http://www.impactweaponscomponents.com/iwc/product/view/by_handguard_type/troy-battlerail-alpha/
