I've recently re-discovered my love for "Ol' Slabsides".
I have a SA Loaded 1911 A1 model that was manufactured in 2000.
This pistol utilizes a firing pin for the 9mm, 38 super.

The firing pin diameter in my SA .45 is .0695

The GI spec. is .090

All other dimensions in my SA are GI. I've cross checked parts fitment and all other GI parts fit fine.

My belief is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". BUT, I also prefer commonality when it comes to parts inventory, especially small parts.

The Question:
Would it be a problem to re-cut the firing pin hole to the proper GI spec size?

The pro's to me are:
Parts commonality: one pin size for all guns
Firing pin diameter being much thicker: Less prone to tip breakage

The con's to me are:
No con's at this time:confused:

you could do it But why bother? and a some of the other custom makers are also going to the smaller firing pin and hole they say less primer flow is the reason

I've never paid any attention to the firing pin size in my Kimber. Don't guess it matters, it goes bang every time.
I'm with the others here, don't worry about it. If you are concerned you might need to replace it at some point and not be able to find one the right size, why not just buy a spare now and keep it handy just in case?

They put 9mm firing pins in them for reason...but right now I cant remember what it is. Its something about the primers...I think maybe to reduce primer flow...but I'm not sure. Go to 1911forum.com and ask the question.

FWIW...Les Baer puts 9mm firing pins in all his 1911's.:)

EDIT: I should have read all the replies...Bud has done answered you...I thought it reduced primer flow, but wasn't sure.

unless I was having problems with breaking firing pins I would leave it alone.

The commonly given reason for using a non-standard size firing pins is primer flow with hot loads.

Primer flow on a .45ACP doesn't concern me in the least.

I prefer all my firing pins to be .45 size for commonality.

I'd cut it! It'll make the weapon lighter!
