View Full Version : S&W Barrels?
I have a co-worker who has offered to sell me his barrel from his S&W M&P15 MOE for a very attractive offer. He has said it is a1:8 twist chrome lined 4140 steel carbine barrel assembly with 5r rifling but I cannot find any info on such barrel. Does anyone know if this was actually produced by S&W or is my co-worker mistaken on some of his info. Thanks for any insight on this barrel.

^^^That's the new one but they've since changed the barrels. They used to use the 4140s when the MOEs first came out. I believe the OR rifles still use them. If his is the MOE with the carbine length gas system it may indeed have the barrel he's referring to...
The smith barrels are made for S&W by Thompson Center ( S&W owns them>)
None of the Smith 1/8 5R barrels are chromelined. They are ferritic nitrocarbonized aka tennifered aka melonited inside and out.
The advantages/downfalls of this process vs chromelining have been debated to a hilarious level here at M4C :D
The new Magpul spec has a 4150 CMV 1/8 twist 5R barrel with the above treatment.
The old MOE edition was 4140 steel 1/9 twist chromelined with conventional rifling and a conventional profile. If this is the barrel he is trying to sell you it will be easily identifiable by having a 203 cut and 1/9 stamped on it.
The 4140 1/8 5R barrel has a heavier profile is featured on the M&P 15 Sport and M&P 15 T model rifles, and was never made available on the MOE edition.
Here is the spec sheet for the "old" MOE edition. Compare to the above that Plouffe posted.

I have a new barrel from a M&P sport for you to compare it to so you can rule it out.

I have an M&P 15 MOE edition (not the middy) and it has
a 4140 Crhome lined 1x9 (not 1x8)

Thanks for all the replies. I will go ahead and purchase the barrel assembly and try to figure out what it really is because the deal is just to good.
