I'm waiting on a Colt LE901 in 308. It'll be my first AR in 308. I want to get a scope that will have some magnification but also have close to 1x and a reticle that will let me do closer quicker shooting to. The range I'll us it for is 50-300yds. I know the 308 can go much further, but our range doesn't and I don't know that my skills could either. Optics get pricey quick and I'm trying to keep it under $700. I like the 1-6 models, but most have a simple duplex and hover near $1K. I think a good compromise might be the LEUPOLD Mark 4 MR-T 1.5-5x20mm (one-inch) Matte SPR reticle: http://dsgarms.com/ProductInfo/LEU59100.aspx.

The 1.5, while not 1, should do well at 50 yds. The 5 will do well at 300 and the reticle will help for shots that far or even further, but I have to travel a long ways for a range with more space. I won't need illumination and the price is right. Thoughts and suggestions?

If you can go up to a grand, SWFA's 1-6 should be out soon. FFP with a usable donut on low power, mil-dot on high power. There's buzz about it. We'll see when it finally drops, but it looks to be decent.

May want to consider the VX-R Patrol line from Leupold. Less than $600 for a 1.25-4. Vortex PST line has good reputation and price. SuperSniper 1-4 can also be had for $800 which might be worh saving for. You can also look for a used scope if you don't want to save a bit.

What about the Vortex PST 1-4x?

+1 on the VX-R. The SWFA falls short in providing a true dot at 1x. The Vortex PST is a quality, low dollar scope, but the reticle is not daylight visible. Leuplod has a unique reticle illumination technique using fiber optics to "pipe" the light to the dot. The VX-R is daylight visible although not quite Aimpoint bright.

Good luck!

The VX-R looks pretty good. Not doing three gun or planning on shooting at dusk, so I'm not sure that I need illumination.

What about the Vortex PST 1-4x?

I love my PST 1-4x Vortex, while the illumination may not be as bright as the VX-R, the optics blow the Leupolds away as far as clarity and brightness.
