So I handled an SR-15 at the shop.

It felt sooo right. weight ratio was balanced very well.

I would like to build an sr-15 style upper. I'm ok with the basic ar lower trigger / mag release etc.

I have questions for someone who may have done this, or knows the parts well.

Has anyone tried this?
Is there a similar rail?

Also, is it a 16" middy? Low-pro block?
Who makes a good barrel these days? I usually go BCM but looks like their out of stock.
I have all the lower stuff, just need to build the upper.

Any input is much appreciated.

Why don't you buy a factory SR-15 upper? :)

But yes, you can buy the rail separately if you can get them while they are in stock. You can get them in a number of different BBL sizes/gas configurations I believe.

Any reputable barrel mfg (Noveske, BCM, etc) would work, but I still say to just buy a factory one in the barrel length you desire.

are you just flat out against purchasing an SR-15 E3 upper?

lots of different places sell just the uppers....

I didn't know they sold parts.

Perfect, thanks for the links!

I would be real careful with the listed links. They are not known as the go to guys and many have questioned their business practices.

Before knesek, I would call any of these first:

Lawmens & Shooters Supply
Operation Parts
King Optic
Weapon Outfitters

That's a great price. MSRP is actually $1450.

I'd also recommend a KAC SR-15 upper, but if you have an irrational fear of the E3 parts, BCM makes uppers with the URX rail and there is always the Noveske Project Ares (http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=2890), though I'm not sure whether they are available as an upper or only as a complete rifle.

The Ares certainly conveys the SR-15 'look' and configuration and is composed of excellent parts (Noveske barrel, Geiselle trigger, KAC rail, etc). I've never handled one (or seen one in real life, but my SWAG is that it will weigh more than the SR-15E3 due to the stainless barrel.

In any case, I think the E3 parts and IWS lower are what really makes the SR-15E3 a unique option, and again highly recommend the original.

As mentioned above, there are plenty of variants from the exact SR-15E3, many attempting to use better parts to specialize the weapon for one role or another, but the value argument for an all-around carbine tends to lead you back towards the KAC unit.

That said, I have an SR-15, love it, and I'm spending a lot more money to buy something that I feel is merely a slight upgrade (Noveske Intermediate barrel, GSSA-E trigger, KAC Offset sights, URX 3.1 handguard). The base KAC is that good, and I'm still really looking at simply upgrading the handguard on my current SR15 just to match.

Llama, I had a Noveske N4 middy with a rifle length URXII. I ended up selling it because it was heavier than the E3 and I didn't really see any performance gain. I am currently debating an upgrade to the 3.1 rail on my Legacy E3 and possibly recycling the mid urx to use on an SBR build.
