View Full Version : Mosin at 500?

I'm not trying to doubt someone but that dosen't "look" like 500 yards to me.
The vapor trail lets you see the drop and from what I see it looks good, but from the lens of the camera I would have guessed about 300 yards not 500.
So I'm asking how long should it take the round to get to target at 500 yards from a 91/30.
Well you really wouldnt be able to easily tell by bullet flight time. Depending on what bullet weight they are using, I believe milsurp ranges from 150ish grains all the way to over 200, the muzzle velocity will be widely different.
The best method would be to measure the time from bullet impact to when you hear the hit. Sound travels somewhere around 1050-1100 FPS depending on a crap load of variables. From what I was able to measure watching and using the stop watch on my phone it looked like a little under 1.5 seconds, which could be right around 500 yards.
I saw a fair amount of bullet drop/ flight time in the video, so I was fairly confident that it was legit. Like I said viewing from a video isn't like being there and seeing the range in person.

Here is a video of me and my 91/30 at 400yds for some comparasion:

Pardon my overly excited spotter...
Someone put a fake video on yootube?
I don't find it hard to believe someone could squeeze 500 out of a mosin that has been well cared for and in good condition.

This is especially true of those who are lucky enough to own one that has not been crowned or backbored. As long as the bore is straight and headspace is good - 500 is an entirely acceptable shot for just about any MN.
