That is pretty damn impressive. I would love to get more info on what he did this with.

That's Tom Sarver. great guy, impressive competitor. He runs some really cool matches up there. The "headhunter" match is one of the most fun 20 rounds you'll ever shoot. seriously, it's worth the drive. I went last year and year before, but didn't make it yet this year.

edit: another impressive feat... at my PMG Spring Team Match, Sarver was shooting the long range stage. 2 rounds at about 1100 yards. According to George Gardener (GAP) who was ROing with a monster team scope... Sarver had his second round in the air before the first one hit the target. (I think he was shooting a 260rem bolt gun, but don't remember). Anyway, I asked Tom about it after the match and he said he saw the trace from his first shot and new it was good and went ahead and sent the second one. wish i could do that!

Tom sure spends a lot of time talking to shooters. I hear that guys name EVERYWHERE.

I've never shot with him but I've heard enough stories to plug up the missouri if they were printed.

he said he saw the trace from his first shot and new it was good and went ahead and sent the second one. wish i could do that! The problem is that most people don't run a fast enough cartridge that leaves enough trace to be able to see it.

I bet that 7 hulk is running about 5 mils to 1000yds. That's just a guess. That means at 25x, the trace doesn't leave the scope. Granted, you better be behind the rifle right... but as long as she's coming straight back, that trace will look like a train going through the air at mach 10.

Just out of curiosity, what would be a round-about approximate BC for that round?

i "believe" the groups was shot with a 338, but not 100% sure ... i was just shooing at a 12" plate and a 24" plate at 1 mile at this same range with my 260 using 142smk, 22mils, and from 1 to 2.5mil wind that day..

i hit the 24 a few times, and got with in inchs of the 12"
the shooter next to me with a 300wm and 208amax i think hit it once and called it a day :)

Just googled that round. 175 grain VLD at 3400 FPS. Impressive.

Can you blame him? It has been my experience that when you accomplish a feat that can't be repeated, it is time to pack up and call it a day. If anybody asks questions, I'd tell them I was just checking my cold bore dope. ;-)

Was surfing the net and came accross this thread. Recognized the picture as one of my targets that I shot at the Mile.

Here is the original picture as well as another target I shot in '08.

Amazing shooting OP.

Sorry for the strange question guys but I always wondered this when I hear about mile plus shots:

What is the view of the target from that far? Like how much detail of it can you see with your scope, and what power do you use? How large is a man compared to the mill dots?

Would you compare what you see, using a RDS at like 400 yards or is it more precise than that?

The rifle I have been shooting out there is a .338-.408 improved wildcat that shoots the 300 SMk at 3,200 fps. This particular rifle has been very good to me. So good, I have named her Eleanor...LOL

I have her set up with a S&B 5x25 PMII with the P4F reticle.

Those are 1,000 IBS targets we shoot at the mile.

Tom personally took a day out of his time to teach me the inner workings of long range shooting. By the end of the day, my Remington 700 was making shots out to 1200yds around 1.5MOA.

The rifle has been worked on by Tom since then, and is now over at GAP for a rebarrel to 6.5 Creedmoor.

I'm extremely curious where the self appointed experts who believe "if it isn't a 10 shot group it isn't a group worth mentioning on this forum" people are that usually post here criticizing and dismissing people who shoot 3 or 5 shot groups? Do they suddenly have nothing to say? I'll be subscribing to see exactly who is a hypocrite and who shuts the **** up.

Myself, I am impressed. That is some good shooting no matter what anyone says.

While Im not a big subscriber to the 10 shot group idea it does have some merit. I read a thing a while back that showed that a 5 shot group doesn't accurately measure a rifles performance, at 100 yards, because statistically it could shoot that many shots close enough to show a smaller group than the rifles true ability.

That being said what is being done here is in no way showcasing the ability of the rifle. There are probably rifle out there by multiple manufacturers that could hypothetically group that. What we are seeing here is the skill of the shooter. I bet that guy could out shoot me any day if I took his bad ass rifle and he took my Remington 700 308.

The larger the sample size the better. :D

You make some valid points. I'm not a fan of 10 shot groups, nor am I a fan of group shooting at 100 yds. Shooting groups at 100 yards will not give you an accurate representation of the true accuracy capability of the rifle or the shooter.

What will give you a true representation of both the rifle and the shooter's ability is, is to measure the performance of both over multiple outings in different conditions.

Shooting a .250" group at 100 yards does not make that rifle a .250" moa rifle. That's why Load development should not be conducted at 100 yards if you are working with a rifle that will be used in a long range or extreme range application.
The rifle that I used to shoot the posed groups has been a extremely good shooting rifle. It generally hangs in the 12" group size in the mile if I do my part. I have another one in the stable, a .30-.416 Rigby improved shooting 240 SMK, that hangs in pretty close.
In one outing, I let a friend shoot the .30-.416. He never shot past 100 yards before shooting the mile. With a little instruction, and me in the glass telling him when to break the shot, his first group was in mid teens.
This just goes to show that it's not really that difficult with good equipment and a little understanding of the game, which is no different than any other sport.

Tom is a great guy, and the TVP range is awesome. I've been out there a few times T&Eing precision shooting gear and he has always been a huge help.

Was there any discussion on why he went from .300 Hulk to 7mm?
