Tomorrow Im going to look at a pre ban Colt and would like to arm myself with as much info as possible to avoid paying more than I should. Are there any current buyer reference guides out there? Or will I just have to look it over, determine what model it is, then search around to see what they are selling for? Im sorry if this has been covered, several searches turned up nothing. Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for the links. Turns out, it WAS a pre ban rifle... however, it was decked out with every cheap china made accessory on the market and he was asking too much. Had it not been overly accessorized with garbage I would have gladly bought it. But I wasn't about to buy it for the receivers only. :cray: I was quite disappointed.

UPDATE: I found out the seller has the original handguards and buttstock to sweeten the deal so I am re-interested in this rifle. The buttstock has the original cleaning kit inside. He also has the original box this rifle came in(not sure if that adds value if this is a collectors piece). I am not sure if he has a rifle buffer and spring. I have not seen any of these parts yet so Im not sure about their condition. The owner is letting me keep the rifle for a few days to go through it as well as shoot it. Can anyone help me determine a fair price to pay for this rifle? Im not sure exactly what model it is. It has minor dings/scratches. Any insight on this rifle is much appreciated.

I have that same rifle. It's a Colt Sporter Match HBAR, model R6601. I bought mine back in 2001 during the federal AWB. Back then, due to the AWB, I paid $1100 or thereabouts and mine was in much better condition at the time. I have no clue about the market forces in AWB states these days, though.

The fact that it may fetch more $$$ in a ban state is nice, but I'm not planning to sell it anytime soon if I decide to buy it. I just want an AR with the classic/vintage look. I want to strip the crap modifications off it and restore it to its original state. I'm not really sure why I want it... my addiction to these damn things is worse than I thought I guess:confused:

EDIT: Thanks for the clarification on the model. I thought it was an R6601 based on my research but wasnt 100% sure.

Do you really want a Neutered Colt? I can't stand the big hole receiver and this bolt carrier groups piss me off too. You can buy a new Colt for around a grand, less if you shop well. The lack of a Avnet lug irritates me too.

I decided not to purchase this rifle. It's not that I need this rifle, I have several AR's that already take a backseat to my 6920 on range days. I thought I wanted a vintage AR but came to realize, Its just the vintage look that I want. And after some more thought, I really don't need a thousand dollar decoration... yet:p
