View Full Version : Which Back Up Rear Sight for under $100

Hello, I'm looking for a backup rear sight for my new Bushmaster Piston upper. It has a BMAS flip front sight already. I plan to use a EOtech full time. I would really like to find something in a flip type rear for under $100. I like the Troy Battle Sight but I don't want to spend $140 on something that wont see much use. I just want something that will be a back up if I need it. So what do you think the best rear back up sight is for under $100

Thanks :D

About half way down on the page part # 9680. This is the only one I can think of for under $100. Your best bet is to watch the Members sales forum for something used that is of a better quality. There also may be some one else who can recommend a different sight that is of better quality.

FYI- YHM also makes the Bushmaster BMAS stuff!

Well, You could go with the YHM rear BUIS; but at ~85$, why not fork out the extra 10 or so dollars for something spring-loaded or with a more secure mounting mechanizm?
There's not a lot of wiggle-room in the price points of BUIS', unless you go w/the fixed UTG sight for 29.95. You always get what you pay for.

Look at the various auction sites and purchase a USGI Matech. They can be had new for $50-$75.00. Quality is top notch, but they are not meant to be continously removed from the rail without replacing the threadlocker on the screw.

No, buy a KAC 300m rear or used 600m rear for around $100-$110.

I wouldn't buy more YHM sights if I were you. One is enough.

Actually Midwest makes some of the nicest BUIS around and their rear goes for $99.

and their front sight buis are damn nice too to match.

Buy the ARMS. Don't buy the MI. The MI is just like the YHM rears. They don't really fold "down." They just "fold."

Kinda like someone standing and then bending at the waist versus actually laying down to stay low profile and take cover.

The YHM and MI are just big and bulky.

Look for an ARMS #40L. Very flat.

LOL, I foresee SuicideHZ and I to have even further different tastes and opinions on many more things to come.:D

The MI ERS is a little taller when folded down due to it having a traditional A2 windage adjustment knob (which is preferable to me), but it still folds down just fine unless you have height issues. That extra aluminum for the body of the sight means extra strength too.

If you want super flat than spend the money for the TROY's, but I personally don't like the ARM's much with it's exposed spring, longer design or quality. To each his own though and the Midwest fronts with their partial hooded HK style sight picture is a great sight picture and perfect for the ERS.
You can get them in different heights too for your mounting needs whether now or later.:)

How soon do you need it? It may be worth waiting until after SHOT to see if there is anything new.....

I'm in no big hurry, it's just going to be a back up for my eotech. I'm going to keep my eye open for a deal on a used one as well.

That new Magpul sight does look interesting.

I wonder how tough it will be. Polymers strength to me has been in it's ability to flex and bounce back, but overall tensile strengths are still lower than T6 6061 aluminum from what I've found on Matweb.
For a part like BUIS's where flex isn't going to matter much I think compared to just overall tensile strength of the sight base, I don't see them as being a better choice. Cheaper probably, but not better.

I got a set of YHM sights from Valhalla Tactical and I think they were right around 110.00. I also picked up a Matech BUIS on Ebay for 52.00 BNIP.

Unfortunately those Matech BUIS' on ebay are all of the 600m variety. Now if there were other apertures you could drop in, they'd be a steal. Plus, some folks have had issues with the elevation getting bumped on gear during movement and adjusting themselves.

What is wrong with a 600M BUIS? Also, I used one for quite a while on an M16A4 here in Iraq and had no issues with it all. But, then again I always check my gear before, during and after. Just a thought.

There are some pictures of the Magpul Back Up Sight (MBUS) at the below link. People who saw the MBUS need to remember that the version unveiled was a rapid prototype, and the production models are going to look a little different.

Haven't had a prob with A.R.M.S # 40 ...stays down and out of the way when not needed...rapid deployment when needed works great with an EoTech and seems very well built

I saw and held this sight at the SHOT Show and had one immediate concern. The rear sight does not seem to lock in the up position. I have never used any other BUIS that does not lock. Does anyone know if the production model will lock?

SuicideHz
02-08-08, 21:46
A lot of sights are not meant to lock up. The spring takes care of that. The reasoning is that if you were to bump the sight it would be better to dola and spring up rather than break or foul up a detent.

My suggestion: Spend the extra 40-bucks and buy a Troy BUIS - they're built like a tank and work like a charm....Why skimp?

If you are refering to the Magpul BUIS I was told in the Shot show thread that no it won't lock up. It is kept up by spring tension from what I understand, like the before mentioned ARMS#40. It will lock down, and with a press anywhere on the front part of the sight it will spring up. It sounds good to me and I plan to pick up a rear at least, when they become available.

Apparently some of you have never seen Night of the Living Dead or Pet Sematary or else you would realize that bringing stuff back from the dead never ends up well.
