So with the advice from the members here I now have my first bolt gun. Nothing fancy just a 700 SPS Tactical with a Bushnell 10x Mil/Mil on top.

I need some help identifying a good soft case for home to range transport, a hefty 5 miles...

I currently have it in a TacOps drag bag, but it's a large one and is too big for that little 20" barreled beastie.

Can anyone recommend a bag that'll fit better? Hell, I'd trade my current bag if anyone has something that'll work and needs a longer bag for their rig.

Anyway, thanks again guys for all the help in setting up this first gun.

I use that el cheapo Galati that was on GearHog a few months back. Perfect for my SPS tac.

I think it's only $35 regular price at Galati.....

i have all but given up on soft cases. been looking for a decent hard case for a while too (don't say pelican or storm).

one thing that has worked pretty well for me is the eberlestock backpacks. i use the x3 lodrag (see pics in my NV thread). The scabbard holds the rifle well and has pretty decent padding. The backpack holds everything i used to carry in my range bag, from knee pads to ammo to med kits, sunscreen, bug spray, shot timers, and lunch. etc etc

I picked up a Starlight case of the prize table at Rifles Only, and it's been awesome. It's flown multiple times, been generally beat up, and has held up very well. It protects the rifle well too, as I had no POI shift after flying. I like the latch system in particular.

it's a size/weight thing. sure they do a good job of protecting, but i can never find one the right size for my rifles. they take up too much space in my house and vehicles. with a mid-sized truck, i can't fit my pelican or storm cases in the cab and have to leave them in the bed, which makes it easier for people to steal them when i'm driving across the country to a match and stop for gas or food.

also, i take groups of new shooters to the range often, and so often take several rifles to shoot, and having 4-5 cases just takes up way too much room. i'd also like a shorter one that's more square instead of flat, for folding stock chassis.

i think they are ideal for when you are flying commercial and bringing a single rifle, but that's not what i'm doing.

So any recommendations for a soft case for a 20" barrel bolt gun?

For just carrying around where a big case is not needed I run a T.A.B. Gear rifle cover. It is very convenient and it is fast to take off in the field.

I believe, you'll have to call them, but they may special build the cover to fit your gun.

I'm using a Midway branded 50 inch sniper drag bag

Lots of room, well constructed especially for the price. It essentially houses just my R700 SPS Tactical but can house and extra rifle with it's split divider. I usually just place my spotting scope in there as well with the tripod in one of the long outside pockets. The large pocket I have my rear bag, ear-pro cleaning kit etc.
