Hey all,

I currently have a Colt LE6920MP and I love it. I have the itch to purchase another AR15. The main purpose of this rifle would be to plink around and shoot some steel on my friend's property. This will be a shooter and far from a safe queen. Scratches and wear will eventually be the norm for this AR. However, I can't decide if I want to build my own or if I want to purchase a cheaper priced one. I've been reading more and more good things about the S&W M&P15 Sport and it seems to be priced around the $700 price point.

That got me thinking what kind of plinker AR could be built for the money. Perhaps I can get a better rifle for the money if I piece it together component by component. Could this be done?

I'm asking for some ideas here. What kind of plinker can be built under $700? I do not want to use the cheapest quality parts. Quality is very important to me and I still want a quality rifle. It will be fed cheap plinking, dirty, target ammo too, so it must cycle the cheap stuff reliably.

Please post up your ideas for a $700 plinker AR15! Iron sights are fine for now.

Have at it!

I would second a .22 upper for plinking or a M&P 15-22 but if you want something else how about this route.

Upper: $270
http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/complete-uppers/5-45x39-russian-hammer-forged-stripped-upper-without-bcg-or-charging-handle.html

Lower: Buy a palmetto cosmetic blem stripped lower for $60

MOE lower build kit: $145
http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/lower-parts/build-kits/moe-lower-build-kit.html

BCG and Charging handle $150-$175 either PSA, BCM

DD fixed BUS: $70

Total $695-$720

Then buy a 1080 rd can of 5.45 from aim for $160 and enjoy

Dang... That right there is a pretty great idea. I'm guessing yes, but does 5.45 work in regular AR mags?

Yes and no. You'll also have to download to 20-25. It's better to buy ASC purpose built mags.

Why not just spend a bunch of money on ammo and go plinking with the 6920?

My veiw frim learning the hard way...

The build way only pans out if you already have the tools. And cheap ar's are just that, cheap.

To me, if my precious range time is interrupted with malfunctions, fixing the rifle or pistol, or any other bullshit, I'm going to be pissed.

Buying a decent ar or upper would be what I suggest. Don't totally Scrooge out on this and you will be much happier.

You should browse the classifieds on tos. I have a post ban 20" Bushmaster upper that is 100% reliable after around 1200 rounds. It doesn't have the evil bayonet lug or flash hider though but that's why no one wanted it.

M&P Sport would be a great pic.

Ya know, I really can't find a reason not to pick one of these. If you have any personal experience with one, let me know as I respect your opinion.

I don't get it, why don't you just shoot your colt? It seems perfect for what you want to do with it.

I understand wanting a second gun, but having a colt I don't know why you would want a less than gun. Get another colt as a back up, or something a little different like a Daniel Defense with a 12" free float rail.

When did BCM start making 5.45 BCG's?

On that note, Wahoo brings up a great option with the M&P sport if you want to stay 5.56 but I would also suggest the M&P 15-22 since .22 is really cheap to shoot and I have a blast with mine.

Buy $700 worth of ammo and use the 6920 to plink.

$700 is like 2500+ rounds ..

I love new toys as much as the next guy, but that's a lot of plinking right there..I'd feed the pony and enjoy it; get to know it that much better.
