View Full Version : Cheap and easy fix for AR's in the safe:

Necessity is the mother of invention they say. Not sure if anyone else has this issue, but I did and thought I'd share my solution. Bottom line, my AR's were too short to stand in the racks in my gun safe. The 16" gun could be made to fit by fully extending the stock, but the 10.3" wouldn't fit at all. I began by inserting a 3/16" dowel down the bore. and leaving enough length to catch the rack. This worked ok for the 16" gun and allowed me to leave my stock where I like to shoot it, but with the length of span on the 10.3" gun, there was a lot of flex in the dowel to the point that I was afraid it might break while the gun was in storage.

Then I got the idea for the following. Essentially, I use a 3/8" dowel from the flashhider up to the rack, and the stepped-down 3/16" dowel goes in the bore to provide extra support because there's only about 1" of engagement between the 3/8" dowel and the flashhider.

Here's how I made the adapters:

I just use a cleaning rod

I have too many SBRs and not enough cleaning rods.

I built a little "step" for them.

Magnetic cheapies from Lowes...Bessey brand, same as the vise:

I always use cotton to clean my guns, and its good that you have use vise jaw for more neatness.

I dont like to store my ARs upright. All the lube tends to end up in my buffer tube.

Ah ha, good thinking.

I usually tip'em over when I'm reaching around. I'll have to give this a try

Just a thought, I have found that SLP2000 does a pretty good job staying where its supposed to.

My answer is to pile everything like wood....

Only problem with that would be the gun I would want that day would guaranteed to be on the bottom of the pile!

Haha, that's how I do it. I have ammo stacked under the shorter rifles...
