I just ordered this from brownells.
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=40312/sku=073-000-007/Product/AR-15-Cleaning-Kit

Just got my first AR yesterday and all I had was a old hoppies kit and worried I might of scratched the inside of the barrel a bit so I never want to have that issue again.

I noticed on the vid on brownells they show cleaning the barrel from the muzzle end? I heard that was not a good idea cause the crown you do not want to wear down.

No but I think I will start. I use Iosso brushes on my rifle and I am about due for a new set. This looks like a pretty good kit to replace what i got. Update this thread with your thoughts on it once you use it a few times. I know I like the Iosso stuff i use so it is pretty appealing, to me anyways. Thanks for the link.

No experience with that kit but FWIW, I followed forum member a0cake's suggestions and ordered this stuff yesterday.

Bore guide (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/115057/jp-enterprises-bore-guide-ar-15-556-nato-223-remington), cleaning rod (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/342014/tipton-deluxe-1-piece-cleaning-rod-22-to-26-caliber-36-carbon-fiber-8-x-32-thread), jag (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/356987/tipton-rifle-cleaning-jag-22-caliber-8-x-32-thread-brass)and bore brush (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/196090/dewey-no-harm-bench-rest-style-rifle-bore-brush-22-caliber-8-x-32-thread-bronze)

Quality stuff; all I need and nothing I don't. It's kind of like 'home theatres in a box' compared to a quality receiver and speakers, it seems like a better idea to get what you need, not what a company decided to put together and sell as a one-kit-fits-all package..

I don't like the thought of using a boresnake on my AR, I rarely even use one on my pistols.

It gets expensive for cleaning supplies. Ill let you know how it goes I also got some of the Iosso bore cleaning solution.

What I like about the Iosso kit also is it comes with a tube to go over the gas tube and a pipe cleaner for the gas tube and gas key.

I wouldn't worry too much about cleaning your gas tube. The same forces that, over time, will erode your gas port do a pretty good job of self-cleaning the gas system. Clean the outside of the gas tube protrusion (the part inside the upper receiver) and the inside of the carrier key into which the gas tube inserts. Neither of these operations require a special tool.

Don't take my word, though. This being your first AR, you should read through the TM for the M16 FOW.

Right? I get FLAMED by the upstate's most respected tactical car lots, err... I mean... GUN shops who have indoor ranges about my cleaning habits, too. I also hear I lube them too much. I thought this was interesting, so I immediately went to the parking lot and drained 3 quarts of oil out of my truck.

Wait, are you telling me that they don't need to be cleaned each time you take them out to confirm zero with 9 rounds?

I bet you'd say that the female end of a cleaning rod section isn't the best tool for removing carbon from a barrel extension!

I basically use a bore snake to run through my barrel and the m4cat tool to clean the carrier and bolt. That's about it.

Chamber brush after shooting steel case, sometimes.

So no, I have not used that cleaning kit.

I got the kit today its pretty nice but seems over priced im sure it only cost 5 cents to make lol.

There was a mark down the inside of the barrel that had been bothering me cause I was worried it was scuff marks. I made a few passes with some remington bore cleaner and the nylon brush on the rope thats in the Iosso kit and it got the barrel really clean. Absolutely no grime came out on a patch after that.

I will prob only use a bore snake from now on though for the barrel. Unless I need some serious cleaning.

My AR cleaning kit:

Slip 2000 or EWL
Old toothbrush or GI brush
Chamber brush and rod segment
Boresnake
Rag

Don't clean the gas tube. Replace it when there's a problem.

If the peanut gallery thinks you're lubing it too much, you're probably doing it right.

I prob did waste my money they are really easy to clean. If anything prob just get the Otis cable and a bore brush, chamber brush, clp, and a bore snake. Brownells does have a 100% satisfaction grantee and the Iosso bore cleaner was open when i got it and leaked all over.

I use the chamber brush and bore brush that came with my Colt, run of the mill pipe cleaners, patches, and rags. Most of the time my patches are cut up pieces of cotton T shirts or Viva paper towels.

I use four Otis cables two for patches "wet, dry", two for brushes "5.56, 7.62". Chamber brush on a rod section. Leftover brown t-shirts and Froglube.
