View Full Version : Precision ARs, and long range "booms".....

I can't believe it's taken me this long to play around with shooting some tannerite at long ranges...relatively speaking given the limitations of the velocities needed to set off the binary explosion, as well as how small the 1lb or less exploding targets make for anything past a cpl. hundred yards or so.

Recently I found a newer exploding target which is referred to I guess as "rimfire sensitive"...meaning that even .22lr subsonics @ 100yds carry enough velocity/energy to set off these particular targets.

So these seem like they would make ideal longer range exploding targets given how much velocity loss occurs past a few hundred yards or so of flight.

Midway shipped the following items out my way this morning...

Tannerite White Lightning Rimfire Exploding Target Package of 12

http://media.midwayusa.com/productimages/440x330/primary/166/166035.jpg

Next I got two Tannerite Exploding Target 1/2 lb. Jar
http://media.midwayusa.com/productimages/880x660/primary/118/118185.jpg

and finally one Star Targets Exploding Rifle Target Plastic container 1lb.

http://media.midwayusa.com/productimages/440x330/primary/499/499640.jpg

At 300-400yds, shooting 12 of those very small low velocity ok type rimfire tannerite targets will require a true precision based AR.

Then I figured I'd place the two 1/2lb jars somewhere around 500yds, and the 1lb. plastic container at 600yds.

Looking for about 13 booms....So if anyone has suggestions for ways to enhance this mini exploration of mine, please share away....I'm a straight rookie when it comes to tannerite, and figure some of you guys would know things that I might not know about enhancing the effects of tannerite. I guess in simple stupid form....is there any particular type of office equipment better than another for these purposes....copier vs. rear projection computer monitor:D

Finally for now, and just to help define this thread's mission better prior to lifting off , I'm linking a previous thread of mine that I hope this one will mirror in the end so that for those interested they can try to follow what my line of thinking is for doing this. Basically because of my hyper curiosity about things such as tracers/specialty ammo, or now tannerite. Only thing I try to bring new to the table is by trying my best to incorporate some of the inherit magic that goes along with "long range" shooting into my take on say tracers....or now tannerite.

Let's discuss specialty ammo(.223/5.56) (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=85734)

I put fruit (usually small watermelons because the red insides are easier to see) ontop of the tannerite. Fragments of watermelons fly everywhere.

I love to eat watermelon though:)

Thinking maybe of floating the two 1/2lb jars in the middle of a pond...

eta...thinking of using the MWS vs. a .223 LP AR. What do u guys like the best in terms of caliber...16" .308, or a 18" .223?

Won't that kill the fish?

i have shot cases of tannerite... lots of fun, but honestly, i'm not into annoying the neighbors or blowing up washing machines etc. i prefer to take a bag of water balloons and pour tannerite into them without inflating or stretching the balloons. you can make about 7 balloons from 1/2 pound jar of tannerite. they wind up being slightly larger than golf-ball sized. perhaps 2" diameter. a hit still produces an impressive "boom" plus usually a 6-8' cloud of smoke.

and it lasts 7x as long (more if you miss the smaller target)

RE: Fish...only thing living in that pond is a frog or two, it was formed during natural gas mining, and personally I won't stick my finger in it if I don't absolutely have to......and I'm known for sticking my finger is some toxic locales before:eek::D

Thanks Taliv for a great tip. I do think for the first go round I'll go by the book/directions just to get a solid understanding of tannerite, then I'll give your method a go for sure.

I was kidding about shooting office supplies, at the most I would be using enhancements just like what Koshinn recommended using fruit. No propane or gallons of gas.

Again my main intention for both finally buying some tannerite, and then by extension starting this thread was to explore the use of tannerite as an aid for pursuing my favorite normal activity of shooting precision ARs at distance. The rimfire low velocity targets have my interest big time, more so than tannerite products have ever done in the past. The 2200fps or whatever velocity threshold for the normal stuff always kept me away by in large. This "rimfire" sensitive stuff could be incredibly awesome at 1k+.

Also thanks Mistwolf for weighing in as well, as much as I urn to use accelerates, it's just too messy to deal with....and folks might get the wrong idea of what I'm trying to do in general. The flour is however an excellent suggestion, and one I've read up on some but still am trying to learn about a potential better mix like flour that aids in a fire ball effect or something. Believe you me, any free time I've had now since ordering the goods, it's spent day dreaming on google, and youtube searching for inspiration.

I bought this tannerite "kit", and specifically that new "rimfire sensitive" stuff within 1-2 mins of watching this video.....these little targets are amazing based on the footage. If I get 75% of the explosions seen in the video, I'll be extremely happy, and will certainly order a bunch more of them.

Terrific idea! We need video!

I bought 2 lbs a couple of weeks ago and haven't decided on the best way to blow something up for full effect.

I've got one you can add to the mix too.

Just let me know where to FedEx him to.

If you miss (hit the jar but not the Tannerite), the whole thing might sink to the bottom :p

You can call me "Dexter" if I ever see someone torture or kill an innocent house cat.

Scoby....being as your living the dream on your own badass piece of property, you should really have a blast with some of this stuff. Can't wait to see where your two pounds go.

Duffy...flat out if I miss...it's the damn selector's fault, not the shooter or monolithic chassis:D

I'm going to elevate the tannerite charges via stands I built roughly 3-4ft. above the water's surface. Basically I just did some quick math, scaled down the model, and should be essentially recreating the Crossroads-Baker nuclear test over Bikini Atoll. ;)

Midway never ever disappoints me over the years I've dealt with them...truly outstanding business, and it runs like a well oiled machine.

All I got to add for now is.....it's officially on like Donkey Kong:cool:

The MWS is ready to go for the larger containers at 400-500yds....than I configured the MRP Recce for some offhand.....potential night time booms with the little ones.

So you're finally running 7.62 now, Trident?

I've been waiting for this... How come you didn't get an LM8?

Great videos. Just curious, does this stuff fall under any NFA regs that anybody knows of??

Trident...
Several years ago, I saw an episode of Myth Busters, they used powdered coffee creamer to make a huge fireball...

Compressed air, coffee creamer, and a Flare to ignite the creamer...

See what you think...

Sierra, fantastic tip....certainly one that I'll look into a bit further.

So being the little child that I am.....I decided that 2-3hrs. of sleep last night was ok, and decided to run out to the woods in order to test a cpl. small rimfire tannerite targets.

It would be hard to have as much fun while still either keeping your pants on, or not going tot he slammer.

Yes that was just one single 2" disk of this new "white lightning" mix....the amount of light that is released upon impact is mind boggling, and I've played around with a number of flash bangs in the past. The actual report upon impact is one helluva super crisp "boom", however the visuals from the explosion overwhelm your senses to say the least, and I didn't even notice the noise until making the videos.

This is two of those tiny 2" disks taped together....

Upon impact, the amount of light released "ploomed" everything with a lens for who knows how far...crazy awesome!

I was in Hays KS on Wednesday and they are selling 10lb and 20lb box's of the stuff now. The most I have shot off at one time is 1lb and it sounded like a bomb. If we ever get some rain around here I will blow 1/4 pound and 1/2 gallon of gas on top that makes a big fireball.
