View Full Version : The Glock Sickness

I've been looking to get rid of guns I don't shoot and swap them for guns that really fill a niche.

Took a Security 6 up to a couple of fun shops and did some serious fingering of Kahrs and KelTecs- I decide I would still mostly cary my Glock 19.

One of them had a Early Gen3 19 in great condition and I figured I'd get it. I had a 17 and a spare. I carry a 19 and my wife carries a 19 so I've been on a lookout for another.

(newest member of the family - bottom middle)

I went up and heated it up with 100 rounds of WWB, it operated fine. I figure I'll put new sights on it and a Vickers Mag release and skip the stipple job and just keep it in the bottom of the safe.

Maybe if I lay a 17 and 19 together in the safe I'll end up with a 26?

My Glock sickness would be a lot worse if I knew buying the object of my desires wasn't a complete and total crapshoot. Pretty sad when you have a gun on your mind but won't dare buy it BRAND NEW for fear of getting a lemon and are left to hunting for a used model from over 3 years back.

I first started showing symptoms of the disease around 1996. Tried to cure it with a G-21 and G-30. I soon realized that 2 was too many and 24 wasn't enough. I must admit that of all the pistols pictured in the "target group" the ones from 7 o'clock to 12 o'clock belong to the wife as well as 3 of the pistols in the "GAP" group.Be aware that this sickness can be passed on to other family members.I was fortunate to win 3 pistols at the GSSF match in Grand Island,NE this past June,so I'm waiting on a GEN 4 G-20 and GEN 4 G-38 and haven't made a choice on the third one yet.To make things worse I couldn't resist a FDE G-22 and it should be here Monday.

I only have 2. My daily carry 3rd gen G19 police trade and a clean late model 3rd gen G17. By the S# it seems to have been built just before the current fiasco. So far it has been 100% but i haven't had much time to shoot it yet. About 300 rounds +/-. But the sickness has set in! Im currently looking at a gen2 G17 and a gen2 and 3 G21. All former police guns.

You gonna run a couple thousand rounds through it to see if you have brass to face issues before you sink all that money into getting the RMR mounted or are you just gonna hope for one that runs right and go for it? :p

Seriously though, what are most of you guys doing when it comes to new Glocks? Are you slapping night sights and all your favorite accessories on right out of the box or are you running them as range/backup guns until they prove themselves for a few thousand rounds before doing any customizing like stippling and dropping the money on all the extras?

I do certain modifications to my Glocks - Trij night sights, stipple, smooth the trigger and a Vickers mag release. On my spares I'm gonna put on Trij day sights (great for the price) the trigger job and mag release and skip the stipple. I'll work them at the range until they have about 500 rounds through them and then keep them in the safe- I look at them like a hard asset like a precious metal that could be used in a pinch.

You might have been refering to Gen4s though.

I will definitely run some rounds in my new G17 before actually having the RMR installed. Out of all my Glocks (21SF, 30SF, 26 Gen4), I have never had a malfunction that I can remember. All of the malfunctions were user-created for practice/drill. Maybe I am just lucky to receive reliable Glocks. **knock on wood** (for on my G17).

just got an old 23 from a buddy for $300 and it is my EDC now. Trij Night sights already on it so all I did was replace some springs, buy some spare mags and I want more glocks. I am not really a .40 sw guy as my favorite sexy self defense HGs have been 226s in 9mm for some time and I have a good stash of 9mm. But the thoughts of giving glocks a try AND having another caliber to shoot pushed all sense aside and I picked it up. If my wife liked them better, I would make all our serious handguns glocks. Unfortunately, it is just another tool in the shed for now.

I want a 19 or at least a "spare" 23 and I would like to have a 26/27 for when I have to ankle carry at work. I agree, though- it is NOT a sickness. :)

I contracted the illness around '95 when I bought a slightly used G23. Suddenly I was taking a turn for the worse and added a 27, 22, 19, 21 and 30.

Then I came down with the SUPERVIRUS and recently added the 29SF and 20SF. I've tried other cures, but doctors say it's terminal and I'll have to treat it the rest of my life. Oh well.

I got the sickness in 04 when I bought a used G23. Then came a G19in OD, then a used and abused G22 that I paid $250 for and sold for $400 :D. Then I bought a used G26 and a new G17 in OD and my last Glock purchase was a G17L. Next will be a G21 Gen4 in FDE or a G32 Gen4.

Curahee, I would have loved to have taken that Security 6 off your hands. I love .357 mag wheel guns.

Two of everything 2nd generation and a few early 3rd generation keeps my fever down.

I would never own a late 3rd generation or forth generation as in my opinion its too much of a crap shoot what you get reliability wise.

Glock many changes to the 2nd Generation design and "F"ed up the mix and its all Glocks fault trying to keep up with the Jones. (Mainly the XD)

Is the beavertail on anything larger than a subcompact just for guys with ridiculously huge paws?

Seriously though, what are most of you guys doing when it comes to new Glocks?
Extended slide release, mag catch, etc. are all items that you can take off and move to another Glock if the one you have isn't up to par. My thoughts here:

The mag extension does a couple of things for me. It is more comfortable in a two handed grip. I don't have huge hands but when I bear down the pinky of my strong hand is about half off. It also gives me something better to grab if I ever have to pull a mag out. Lastly, it helps me identify my 19 vs 17 mags, especially quickly or in the dark.

I've been trying to keep an eye out for a Gen-2 G17 - I figure there's no better model for me to work on my armorer/modifying skills. An early Gen-3 is another possibility, but I'd probably want to grind off the finger grooves and I'd rather just start without them.

Bullseye you are a lucky dog!

It is damn hard around here to find a 2nd gen G19.

I took the Apex extractor out of my G19 and sent it back...waiting on the latest fix extractor for Gen 3 guns in about 6 weeks.

I swear...if this does not work I am going to sell it and seek out a nice Gen 2 G19...maybe buy two and rat-hole one away while I shoot the other! LOL

Both my Gen 2 Glocks (17 & 22) have been trouble free since I bought them in the 90s.

Oh...those were the days...back when you could buy a Glock, lube it up and blaze away with no troubles and no brass at your noggin! LOL

My ratty looking 1992 made G17 is one ugly looking misfit puppy! It has almost no finish left on the slide and the stippling on the grip frame is worn almost flat in some areas. However....I do not ever recall the damn thing jamming or giving any trouble. Seriously, I have left mags loaded in this gun for 6-8 months in my glovebox and took them out and they ran 100%.

Gotta love that kind of track record. I probably have 10-12k rounds through this thing and other than swapping the recoil spring and a few mag springs...the thing is bone stock.

These were the guns that BUILT Glock's reputation...no doubt about it.
