Lots of people like to think "hell in a handbasket" is a modern phenomenon that started in Columbine and seemed to culminate on 9-11 with further incidents like the movie theater shootings.

Not like in the safe "good old days" of the 1950s for example.

Well how about this? How about a guy who blows up an entire airplane full of people in order to kill his own mother for the insurance money?

44 people murdered for $40.000 (about $350,000 adjusted for inflation) or $1000 per person (about $8,000 a head today).

Real piece of work this guy.

The classic example of "This has been going on for a while" is Charles Whitman at the UT Austin tower. That event is also notable for the number of civilians who brought personal firearms to bear in suppressing Whitman while police climbed the tower to stop him.

Read the end of that wiki source... looks like there were similar bombings in 1949, this one in 1955, followed by ones in '59,'60 and '62.

Crazy to think that there was such a rash of aircraft bombings in such a "peaceful" time.
