View Full Version : Colt "Fighting Gun"...

To a greater or lesser extent every gun that leaves our shop gets used. Sure some more than others but all of the guns are built as everyday shooters and we expect them to used and abused as such. Even still, there are exceptions and extremes to every rule and this gun, along with its owner, probably falls into the “extreme” category. He’s been having us build guns for him for the last few years and recently we had the chance to do some training together. That turned out to be a good opportunity for both us to evaluate some gear and figure out what would be best on his gun which was quickly coming due on my list.

His desires for the gun were pretty simple... after using a abusing a couple of guns for the last few years he knew the things he needed, liked, and disliked. As with every gun absolute rugged reliability was a must, a Kart barrel, hand fit frame and slide, single side safety, PG sights with tritium front, Legacy Custom main-spring housing, and 30lpi checkering front and rear were the only specifics he gave me. He wanted a full-house gun from a cosmetic standpoint but preferred to keep the slide top round and clean along with the rear of the slide... everything else from parts selection to cosmetic detailing was up to me. He ended our last conversation by saying “just build me a nice fighting gun”... here’s the result.

That's about all I could ask for in a carry piece relatively simple infinitely functional. I might have to send you guys some steel one of these days... Kinda off topic but does anyone know if Stan makes an arched mainspring housing?

I've found very few things in the shooting world that please me more than a well-executed 1911, and this is one of the finest that I've seen in quite some time.

In a day where bells and whistles so often predominate, this decidedly old school blaster represents a return to the fundamentals that (deservedly) put Browning's masterpiece on the map.

Where's the sign up sheet? :)

Very Nice. I like the simplicity of this pistol.

That is a perfectly un-offensive 1911.

:D

Which is to say, while some people may want for a different part here or there, it would all be minor bitching, and this gun would more than suffice.

Ya'll should offer this as 'package' to replace the 1*, although I know this would cost significantly more.

Well I picked up the gun today at my FFL and he instisted that we shoot it right there at his range, even gave me 250 rounds to use. Gun ran fine, no problems. 250 rounds is nothing, but tomorrow I have 3 gun, then some training afterwards and Sunday is IDPA. Should be well over 600 rounds by the end of the weekend. It will get cleaned at 1000.

Like Jason said, I have been beating up 1911's for a while now, and have kinda narrowed it down to what I like and dislike. I'm not into too much foo foo and fluff, although I can and do appreciate a finely detailed 1911. I like the newer high tech finishes, but really don't need them in the desert. I originally asked for just polished flatts and matte everything else, but after seeing a earlier Colt he built for me, Jason felt that polishing the frame will help add to durability of the finish, and I'm glad he did. Jason also talked me into trying a short trigger, so I did, but he also supplied a long trigger too.

I have been using Ted and Jason for 1911 work for several years, and they have my trust. What I like about Jason is although he builds some of the nicest 1911's around, he is also a very serious shooter, one who has trained with all the big names and puts many 10's of thousands of rounds downrange each year through 1911's. He also brings in some of the best trainers to Phoenix each year and holds classes. Plus he is just about one of the best shots I know. So he knows what it takes to build a 1911 that will last a long time. It is a pleasure to shoot with him, but also humbling at the same time. I tend to listen when he talks about the 1911, thats why I let him choose all the parts. I even left the grips up to Jason, I just told him nothing too fancy and make sure they give good traction.

I'm very happy with this build. I'll be selling off some other 1911's as this is my idea of what my perfect 1911 is. One thing I am going to try and do is keep this one out of Kydex...........at least for a month:D Sorry Jason. I'll post reports from time to time on how the gun is holding up.

Thats a fine looking 1911.

Holster wear marks and some nics and scratches from hard use will only add to it's looks:cool:

Guys... I can’t thank you enough for your feed back and kind words. For me, building guns like this is what it’s all about... exceptionally detailed work-pieces, such as this gun, is the reason I come to work every morning.

...Ya'll should offer this as 'package' to replace the 1*, although I know this would cost significantly more.

That’s not a bad idea but with just Ted and I here on a day-to-day basis and Steve in his off-time it’s hard to offer a pre-set “package” and then make the customer wait 12+ months for it. That said, most all of the guns we’re doing now get their photos added to the website so, for the customer, choosing to have me replicate this gun is as easy as saying “that one”. ;)

… What make are the grips?

STS - Glad you like the piece and thanks so much for the kind words and most of all the vote of confidence. I fully expect this gun to get rode hard and put up wet... in fact nothing would make me happier. It’s good to see nice guns be appreciated but even more it’s great to see them getting used... keep me posted.

Jason...again, a work of art!

Looked at the web site and didn't see it. How much $ for this pistol configuration?
