I need to read the book before I see the movie version. I have heard that the book describes the downfall of society.

Maybe interesting because of Ayn Rand's hatred of collectivism and socialism. Her attacks on those ideas were quite effective, and that's why many conservatives and libertarians find some affinity with her writings. But otherwise, really not interested. I have no time for Rand's juvenile Objectivist philosophy (it's all about me, baby--but oh wait, this is different from ordinary narcissism because it's ENLIGHTENED self-interest). Adam Smith is rolling over in his grave. His version of enlightened self-interest is quite a bit different from Rand's, IMO. Smith at least recognized that the highest possible form of happiness is not just in productive work, and that enlightened self-interest does not necessarily exclude concern for other human beings.

From the opening paragraph in The Theory of Moral Sentiments (http://www.econlib.org/library/Smith/smMS1.html):

How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it except the pleasure of seeing it.

I read the book 20+ years ago and agreed with some of its general premises. The movie Atlas Shrugged Part II was like being hit over the head with a mallet made of Reardon Steel with dialog that did not age well from the book and some bad acting to boot.

It was lame. Mainly the ending. I liked the 1st part. Is there a part 3?

I also didnt like that the whole theater was filled with retirement aged people sans me and my wife. When some matt damon movie preview popped up and some said"hes just pushing an agenda", i realized we were surrounded by Limbaugh worshipping stepford seniors.
