Anybody bought one? If so how did/would you outfit it? I like the price and the features; except the stock.

I think I'm going to pick one up tomorrow at my local GD.https://s3.amazonaws.com/savagefiles/firearms/models/900/k9n4A478j_8P0556tI1.png

After reading some of the discussions on 16" 308's,I took a look at this 20" rifle. I like it and could easily put it to good use.
I may sell something and pick up one of these myself. Very practical,IMO.It would still handle fine in heavy brush, which we have a lot of around here.

DocH, I'm happy with it. It's coming together nicely. I got the scope mounted and I'm excited to she how she shoots.

Here are some photos. I'll report back with range results.

I was looking at a 223 bolt gun to make a sort of "scout" rifle out of and am considering that Savage Hog Hunter in 223. For the price...it is very tempting.

I might be able to live without the detachable mag, because for the price, I get a 20" 223 boltgun with a decent trigger and the scope mounts back where they should be....not way out front.

I'd love to know how these hog hunters shoot...for the price...they are very tempting.

I'm contemplating converting it over to a DBM. I found the kit at savagesharpshooters.com It isn't real expense, but you will have to change out the stock. Only low cost option for a stock with a DBM that I can find is a Hogue. I'm also thinking of leaving it a blind magazine and installing a nice Boyds laminate stock in pepper gray. Believe it or not its cheaper than the Hogue. I still haven't made it out to the range yet, I removed the Millett scope and installed it back on an AR. I'm back shopping for scopes now.

The Boyds stocks are pretty damn nice!

I just got one in that I ordered for my ratty old sporterized 03 Springfield.

The 03 action literally dropped right in with VERY minor sanding and the gray laminated stock looks really nice. I am planning on doing the barrel/receiver on this rifle in flat black cerrakote so that with the gray stock will look really nice.

Yes, for the price...these Boyds stocks are super nice...I was not expecting it to look so nice.

The wood will get lightly sanded and a few coats of Tru-Oil and it will be GTG.

Nice looking rifle. Typically with Savage you get a lot of quality for a lower price.

Is the end of the barrel threaded? It appears so in the photo.

Yes, it is threaded. 5/8-24. I'm trying to decide on a flash hider now. I want a can, but that's going to have to wait until after the first of the year. I'm also going to pull the Millett DMS-1 and go with better 3-9x40.
