I am looking for a hog gun and was wondering whats a good one. Been looking at 458 socom but I dont know anything about them. I have searched it and got mixed reviews on it. My other ? Is what would be a good 308 if I dont go with the 458

Keeping with the m4 , I would look into 6.8 for hunting

As Gunut said, 6.8 is a capable hunting round for hogs. Also, 300BLK might be worth considering.

This has been covered a thousand times. If you do a search you should find all the answers you're looking for and then some. This forum tries to foster an independent mentality before asking others as well as trying to reduce excess posting. Also when asking people for advice it's best to give more details about you're situation. In this particular case things like range, region (some areas have bigger or tougher animals than others as well as other members who might have experience in the area), terrain, vegetation etc... You'll get better help if you can better explain you're needs and situation.

A quick search for hog gun (https://www.m4carbine.net/gtsearch.php?cx=003496919632624929056%3Adhiwgm0hbaa&cof=FORID%3A10&ie=UTF-8&q=hog+gun&sa=Search&siteurl=www.m4carbine.net%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D114901&ref=www.m4carbine.net%2Fusercp.php&ss=1807j560135j7) came up with 10 pages of results

My suggestion is unless you reload check your area for ammo. I was interested in an upper for my lower but found ammo was limited. I have decided on going the 308 route.

Bottom line is that 5.56 is fully capable of killing hogs. I prefer the 75+ grain rounds, but have done it with lesser weight. Put the shots on target and watch em to the Piggy Death Dance.

I like the 6.8 with 95g Barnes TTSX

I got a 450Bushmaster at Cabela's Every-Once-In-A-While Sale. Seems it cost me $800, including shipping. Shoots like a house afire. Good groups. Definitely a 200yd+ shooter. Ammo readily available at various sources. Dream to reload. .452 bullets and I have not tried the .451 bullets for groups yet (don't know why not) and they are cheaper to buy. Every time I plan to go hogging something happens. Big opportunity coming up in Texas, though.

5.56, 6.8, or 7.62 will be the most readily sourced.
.300 Blk and 6.5 are also good options.
Really no need to get into crazy calibers, unless you really just want to.

Like others hear have said 5.56 will do just fine with proper ammo and shot placement. I usually shoot a 70gr TSX round into the ear and they drop right there. Although recently I've gotten a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in 45-70 and can't wait to pound this 300lb+ boar I've had hitting my feeder. I know it's a bit overkill but is going to be fun anyways.:D
