View Full Version : Is this normal wear for a charging handle?

I purchase a phase 5 ambi charging handle from the gun show about a month ago and installed it on my upper. I did a couple of function checks to ensure the charging handle was operating property. Upon inspecting the charging handle I noticed two chunks of aluminum were missing from the top. My stock charging handle did not have this problem. This can't be normal wear and tear can it? I haven't even shot my AR with the new charging handle. For the price I paid for the charging handle I wouldn't expect this to happen. I enclosed some pics for reference. Any opinions?

What brand upper receiver?

Any damage to said receiver?

ETA - I'd say no, that is not normal for a couple of function checks. Someone's specs are off a tad.

That don't look right. IMO if I'm replacing the stock charging handle, then a Bravo gunfighter is going in.
Bravo's product is tough to beat for design and price. Probably one of the best upgrades a person can do to their AR.

The BCM charging handle is pretty good, but its not ambidextrous.

In the ambidextrous category, the Troy appears to be vaporware, the new Rainier CH appears to be the one to beat.

As to the OP, I don't think that wear is normal, but if it functions to your satisfaction, I'd ignore it and go shoot.

How is this charging handle considered an ambi? (not the Rainier)

Though one can use the right hand to employ this device, the action necessary does not mirror the action the left hand would use.

It's not quite normal but I'll bet now that it's happened, it has self corrected and it's fine.

Do want the Rainier handle......

The first thing I did to my AR was change out the charging H with a BCM IMO they are the best. I understand wanting an ambi and that Rainer looks great.

They consider it ambi in that if you pinch the front and back portions of the charging handle you can use it from either side. Unfortunately this doesnt work for open palming the charging handle or just pulling it from the front, as a large amount of shooters do.

Nothing about that charging handle looks normal to me, but those wear marks don't seem to be a big deal. I'd run it hard and see how she does.

Yeah, my point exactly. No pulling to the rear, with an open palm, using the right hand.

I know the AR 15 will show scratches and dings after some hard use. I was comparing the phase 5 charging handle to my BCM. Notice the BCM charging handle does not have any chips and is showing an even wear. Thanks for the input.
