i tried a search and did not see any topics on this subject.
i have several glock factory 17 mags that will hold 18 shells
is there any reason why i should not run 18
Main reason in my mind would be you are over compressing the spring from what it is designed to take, and from having over loaded a glock mag in the past increasing the chance of malfunction. If you need more then 18 rounds in the pistol, 17 + 1, then get yourself a 33rder, though while I have them I don't run them much because they stick out too much, they are fun. Not to say that if Glock offered a 22rder or 24rder the size of the .40S&W 22rder I wouldn't buy them as either a primary home defense mag or as a reload mag because they are just about the right size for an extended mag to be practical in my hands.
Hint: Glock if you are reading this....

If you top off with 18 +1 the upward pressure that is being exerted onto the bottom of the slide from the magazine may be too much, which results in the slide not going all the way and a new round isn't fed.
It's also not what the magazine was designed for, in other words - don't do it.
That's like putting 31 in a pmag....why start fighting stuff?
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should lol.
In glocks, I always download one round from max capacity, to reduce stress on the spring and have easier reloading with the slide in battery position.
Try for 19 shells. You bird hunting with that glock?

Can and will. I have seen it cause malfunctions in several guns spanning several platforms.
Think of it this way, it doesn't hold 17, its rated for 17.

Precisely. Also.....is the original poster carrying a reload?
Even if I could put 18 shells in my clip, I would still only load 17 rounds in my magazine.
Everyone previously has explained why its not a good idea.
My suggestion is to pick up a +2 Glock floorplate extension, then you can have 19 rounds...

I might start thinking it's time to replace the magazine spring.

That's a bad idea.
