Recently I've seen this Aussie ammo in various packaging configurations on a couple sites. ATG has a deal for 450 rds w/can for $199.95. Shipping to UT is $21.35

Opinions?

I think I would avoid it. The MV appears to be about 200 less than standard M855. In addition a few years back the British sold the U.S alot of SS109 made by Radway Green Arsenal. That ammo wouldn't reliably function in M4's and the military had to issue an ammunition reclassification on it.

The ammo although made to specs was designed to be used in the SA80 which operated different than M4's, etc... Since the Aussies use their version of a Steyr AUG I would be leary of it. The best advice would be to buy a small quantity and try it.

No doubt about the Radway issues, but this stuff seems to not be quite as underpowered. Lake City M855 has an average muzzle velocity of 3,020 fps, while this shows only a slightly less 2,969. But definitely take IG's advice and go with a trial order if possible.

$0.49 per round delivered?

HELL NO!

We had problems with Radway in an M16a1 colt upper... so it sucked in more than just carbine gas systems... Some of the lots of Radway were ok. The brass was good for us loaders.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like a small trial quantity would be a reasonable plan. Should arrive in ~10 days and I'll see how it compares to my supply of Lake City XM855 and PMC X-TAC. With my IMI running low I was hoping to find something comparable--my pre-test bias is that it will probably fall far short. Time will tell. With shipping (and box) it comes to .49/rd. Ouch.

$0.49 per round delivered?

HELL NO!

Pretty much my thoughts. Unless it is borderline match grade I'll stick with my PMC M855 at around $360-380 or so a thousand, about $.38-40 a round delivered.

I thought I would provide a brief report back about my limited experience with the ADI ammo from ATG:

Shipping: Sturdy package made it to Utah in 7 days, 450 rounds packed in a quality .50cal ammo can. Plastic sheets of 10 individual packets with 5 rounds each. Total cost including shipping was .49/rd.

Rounds: Clean with no significant dents/set backs. Tips are not painted green and appear similar to IMI. No discernible primer seal. All rounds dated '07.

Function: In my Colt 6920 with an Aimpoint C3 and magpul mags there were no malfunctions over 150 rounds. Brass in typical shape after firing.

Performance: Bench rest @ 50 yards, beautiful day, no wind, and no chrony (sorry). Between each 10 round group I re-zeroed the C3 with 3-5 rounds of the respective ammo. Compared to Federal LC XM855(1) and IMI 62gr(2). ADI is (3). Order of testing was the same. See photos.

Bottom line: I like the ammo. Expensive. I rooted around and found a deal for a 900 round can at SGA for $349.50 with a $16.00 shipping fee. (I paid over $21.00 for shipping from ATG.) Total cost from SGA: .41/rd.

Comment:
This is still more expensive than the IMI I wished I had bought more of last year when it was available from Wideners. But this is obviously not 2011 and reasonable costs are difficult for me to sort out given the current politically influenced market. The ADI does seem comparable in my unskilled hands.

Another consideration is the new ammo box. I seem to always be able to find a use for an extra can and these go for between $12-16.00 (used) in my area.

Last thought: I tore off one of the individual plastic pouches and left it in the sink covered in water for the past 3 hours. Just checked and the ammo is dry as a bone. Seems like it will be a good storage ammo should I decide to buy more (probably). Seems like these features help to mitigate the cost somewhat. Depending on how one figures it, this could bring costs down to .39/rd.

AimSurplus just got more M855 in and this time it is Danish surplus.

Price shipped: 44 cents per round

Why they even bother peddling this shit at all....

Wideners is getting this Danish stuff too. Monumentally overpriced there too.

Kiwi in your last post you said the IMI you have has green tips. IMI should have no paint on the tips you might want to check the headstamp. I only have around 300 rounds of IMI left none has green tips. I unboxed all mine to put on stripper clips so i can't take a pic straight from the box.

Just letting you know IMI should not have green tips.

Sorry for the lack of clarity. The sentence: "Tips are not painted green (like the IMI)" could be greatly improved with the following edit:

"Tips are not painted green and appear similar to IMI."

Not the first time a simile has caused me trouble.

I read it on my phone, and that sometimes causes problems. I re read it, but must have gotten it wrong both times. Sometimes when Im tired reading comprehension goes to shit.

I heard about a guy in the same town where i live selling lake city in IMI boxes to people who did not know better. I thought if yours was green tip something similar may have happened.

I just wish a big chunk would hit the market again Im almost out, and stupidity on my part caused me to buy less than i should have.

While this has nothing to do with the Aussie 62gr currently available...

The IMI 62gr from about 15+ years ago was green tipped. If you find some IMI 62gr to buy, check the manufacture date.It may or may not have a painted tip.

The last IMI batch was not painted on the tip. Kinda like most of the current foreign surplus.

Well, what do ya know--I learn something new almost every day on this site.

Maybe Israel used the 55 fmj like we did so they needed to id it quickly. They probably removed the paint when it was no longer needed.

All the IMI i have ever seen had no paint on the tip. It is good to know that if someone is offering IMI m855 with green tips not to just write it off, and actually check headstamps. Thanks for showing that IMI used to have the green tips.

AIM has 900 round cans of ADI 5.56 62gr back in stock. Quality ammo that I'm glad I don't need at this price. I feel fortunate that I bought two cans last November.

Kiwi, do you have any input as the the muzzle velocity of the ADI compared to XM855 as Iraqguns was concerned about?

I don't have a chronograph and have only read the published ADI values on the seller's website. Just now I did a quick Google search and stumbled across this link where the author compared a few varieties of 62 grain ammo in 2013:

http://www.shootingillustrated.com/index.php/29135/62-grains-of-excellence/

I can't speak to the reliability of the author/site. Looks like he used a 16 inch barrel with 1/8 twist. ADI did well in his limited testing.

I like the accuracy of the ADI, but the cost/rd was/is premium for bulk ammo and I still have a case or so at 2012 prices stored away. I've been moving to CBC/Magtech in both flavors (55 & 62) and have started to stock up on it. For some reason, I seem to shoot better up to the 100 yard paper target limit of my range with the CBC.
