What weight and brand/model ammo would you recommend for 5.56/.223 for patrol/SHTF? I'm running a TA31H ACOG with A RMR on a 16inch SR-15. If you run TAP 75gr, would it be a bad idea to train with 55/62gr ammo? Would the results vary too much? I would be looking at distances of 0-300 yards

There are all these great stickied threads in the terminal ballistic information forum and some in this one. Oh and that fabulous search feature works pretty swell.

In SHTF..What ever goes bang.:D I keep 55gr FMJBT (from good manf) as my main round. Its what I train(<-more important than ammo selection IMO) with, all sights set for in differ rifles. But the main reason is because I can afford more of it. More ammo in the fight, the better. Good hits put 'em down no matter what price you pay for the bullet.

In those short ranges, even XM193 would be ok.

How much you want to spend? If your strictly speaking the best the black hills 50 grn tsx load is probably the best all around bullet. For soft targets there's a ton of options if you reload or the black hills mk262 77 grn otm loads are good if you don't reload. Theses rounds are about 1$-1.5$ a pop though.

If you're on more of a budget I'd get one of the m193 clones.

My preferred shtf/stockpile round is the mk318 mod1. Very hard hitting and not as pricey as the tsx's. Although the tsx projo is the way to go if you have the coin. The mk262 and 75gr taps are damn good as well. If you want some real nice stuff look no further than asym ammo. That man does wonderful things with ammo.

But in reality any ammo is good ammo if it goes bang in a shtf scenario.

I like pmc bronze 55gr. I get it cheaper then any other brass case and has been Reliable and accurate. So like everyone else states, it's what I train with an have my rifles zero'd to.
