View Full Version : Any of you happy with MOE ML hand guards?

Finishing a ML build for me son.
The stock hand guards are pretty large in diameter, and no attachment points.

Instead of a good FF system, we decided to save for the optics budget and go with an MOE. Goal was a little less diameter, and attachment points for a sling and a light.

We like the front sling attachment back by the delta ring/barrel nut on the off hand side. The ML MOE is "missing" for lack of a better word, the rear rail slot. The back third of the hand guard has no slot, and it has the same three up front as a carbine length.

The attachment points basically place the rail where you want to hold the HGs with your off hand.

Anyone else have this pop up?

...I like this much better than rail sections.

The only solution I have seen for this was to drill and install an IWC QD sling mount.

Which I haven't tried....yet.

Edit: Damn slow typing on a smart phone Rackham1 beat me to it.

lol, no worries. If/when you or the OP get around to trying it, you'll like it. Tough to beat on an MOE unless you don't like QD. And takes longer to find your misplaced drill bits than to actually install the thing.

I'm not sure whether or not I like QD because I'm only on my 1st AR:( (Magpul SRT has a socket so I'm gonna try it)

And as for the miss placed drill bits...I'm a machinist:D

Yes I am happy with my moe handguards.

If you install the iwc micro qd mount, make sure you use a forstner bit or a drill press to drill the hole. I made the mistake of drilling with a hand drill and standard twist bit and ended up taking a chip out of the hole that the snap ring of the mount did not quite cover. I have since replaced it with a noveske flush qd mount which I think may be a more robust design, and has a flange that covers my mistake.

You can also buy the hand guards from iwc with the micro mount already installed.

Best bang for the buck.
Rails only where I need them.
Reasonable weight.
Heat shield.
Ugly as sin though.

I like mine.

I really like my MOE handguards. I use the illumination kit to mount a Surefire M300A and it has served me well. Only other modification I made to it was to stipple the forward part of the handguards to give me a little extra grip. For the cost, you can't beat the functionality of it.

I'm use rails now but you can't go wrong with a MOE. Lightweight, customizable, and cheap price wise.

I like them as well.

Affordable and functional, with lots of options to customize with lights, sling attachment, hand stops etc. For example, there are a variety of ways to install lights that vary in price, method/placement of light, and type of light supported.

Same here. This is a hunting 6.8 AR with the IWC QD socket. I also have that and an IWC light mount on my newest 5.56 middie, but no pix.

I've been running an MOE handguard on my Middy BCM and have been happy with it. Though I will admit I would have liked to see the slots run all the way back, have thought about that myself, to give more room for options with mounting things, whether the magpul accessories, rails, or other items. Other then that I have no complaints of the set up, though for me it is going to be stopgap until I have enough for FF rail.

+1 I run them on my wife's gun and my patrol carbine.

IWC makes some insanely light kit for them...really sturdy too. I use their rotation limited QD mount that sits in the slot. I use the cantilever MOE light mount for my streamlight TLR-1s. The onyl thing I wish is that their pressure pad cutout worked with somebody besides SureFire. My Streamlight pressure pad doesn't even kinda fit.

MOE is GTG. I've really beat on mine...hard. They hold up. Much tougher than the standard clamshell handguards.

So is that the mid length MOE hand guard on a 16 inch barrel?

I'm currently thinking about that set up and was wondering if the mid length would look good.

Actually, that looks like an MOE on a 14.5" mid length. I say that because it looks like mine. :D

Another fan of the MOE hand guards here. I have them on my Colt 6920 and BCM mid length, and they're great. I like that they are able to be modified as you need them, they're affordable and they fit nice and snug. Definitely some good stuff.

I'm in agreement with everyone else. There is a smidge of rotational play in the handguards, other than that, they are light, durable, and customizable.

I'm also a fan of IWC's stuff. I ended up just getting the regular QD mount that goes in the slot, and am happy with it. Sticks out more than that socket mount, but I'm ok with that.

I put some on my wife's lightweight build. They work great and for $30 they can't be beat.

It's the 14.5" BCM LW Middy with pinned 1.5 Battle Comp. This seems to me to be the perfect non-NFA setup. Light, fast and maneuverable. :)

I actually really like the moe handguards both in look and feel. I actually prefer them to a rail, but rails do offer more versatility.

Both my ML have moe handguards. Like them a lot

One has the iwc qd socket

One has a paracord loop from the last slot to a hole about halfway to thr rear. Use a sling with a hk hook

I really have no use for a quad rail and can't afford a FF. Id rather spend the money on ammo

Thanks,
For now just drilled hole for rail further back, will make that hole qd stud sized when I get one.

They are growing on me

Did that to both of mine. One got enlarged for the Iwc the other just got a loop

Well, with all the info went to give it a try.
Two projects ended up stuck in waiting for stripped uppers to ship mode.
Also changed my barrel selection.

The tip for the front handguard sling QD mount is great.

Now, what are the options for mounting a regular off the shelf G2 light or something the way the Scout mount places it?

I can find a few, but see pictures with way more options. Thanks.

Love them.

Flush QD mount. Drill a 1/2" hole.

http://i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s424/Rmillerm4/image-34_zps1d622307.jpg

Here's the mount:

http://i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s424/Rmillerm4/image-34_zps3bbde99c.jpg

Insert the mount:

http://i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s424/Rmillerm4/image-34_zps0faeaf22.jpg

Insert that snap ring around the outside. Then on the back side there are set screws to keep it from rotating.

http://i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s424/Rmillerm4/image-34_zps319baa19.jpg

This is the final result. It's solid, and isn't a tumor hanging out to snag on stuff. Very happy with it.

One of the better features is they are anti-rotational.

That way the sling doesn't twist up like a damn pretzel.

There is always the option of this:

http://i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s424/Rmillerm4/image-34_zpse86cf2ec.jpg

It's the mossie tactics 2400 FSB mount. You can use a trl-1 or m300. Keeps it out of the way and keeps the slim profile. Also minimal barrel shadow.

I was interested in this after I had problems with lights mounted to the MOE. They snagged, stuck out, and I felt like they limited my hand hold. This fortunately solved all of that.

I like the MOE handguards. I like how they fit my hand and how they look. They seem pretty rugged too. For now, I simply attach the sling with an HK hook to the sling swivel and it works pretty good
