After FINALLY finding a picture of a similar setup atacs upper/lower with brown furniture is definitely out!

So it's either all atacs or atacs furniture with patriot brown upper/lower

I'd just leave it as is. If you want to make it look like a "real" Mk 18 rattle can it with some OD and FDE. As far as Cerakote I'd pick a base color like FDE or lighter tan and then rattle can it based on where it will be used. Then you can strip the rattle can without stripping the Cerakote and change the camo scheme.

For what it's worth, that's my plan. Seems like an acceptable balance between strength of paint and keeping it maintained.

Here's what I was talking about... (Not a fan of this variation)

I'd go 100% Foliage including the lenses on the mini red dot.

A similar idea of what brown upper/lower would look with atacs furniture (yes I realize the pic is digicam)

Id leave it as is. Get some camo furniture & you can always change it out. ck out sexyweapon.com

I'd go 100% Foliage including the lenses on the mini red dot.

I second this, but make sure to get the inside of the dust cover too.

Given the limited number of choices I would choose all A-tacs.

I'm open to other suggestions, I'm good with visualization so if you have a good idea lets here it!

I second the rattle can for an authentic look I don't see many mk 18s hydrodipped but rattle can can:haha:is easy to change.

Dare to be different. Go with ATACS FG.

mikeith

I actually like the FG but here in dirty west Texas it's not green enough to fit in very well

A very important piece of info. In that case, I say Brown receiver and atacs furniture so you can change it later if you move to a greener area, or if you get bored of atacs.

Kinda what I was leaning towards. Id really like to be able to match the receivers with the dd fde rail but apparently no one knows a good cerakote mixture to achieve it

Yeah I say brown reciever atacs is your best bet now that I think of it brown is a good base for camo if atacs doesn't do it for you.:p

I'd just rattlecan it whatever Krylon Tactical's equivalent of FDE is if it were mine but you seem to strongly lean towards A-Tacs so I say go full force in that direction. A-Tacs dipped everything over a cerakote brownbase would like pretty damn slick I think.

Just have some rail covers dipped to match the grip/stock. If you change pattern later you can swap them all.

Mask-off or remove the mag release, the selector switch, trigger and BAD lever, the flipper on the rear sight and the post on the front sight and paint the whole thing.

Don't forget to mask off the glass too ;)

Then use the sponge technique to do the camo, I'd do green over tan, with a touch of brown (or darker green) thrown in for the heck of it.

Next time I do mine that's what my plan is.....until then I'll live with this:

Meeting with a local guy wednesday who does REALLY good cerakote work(warriorcustomz). He is going to work on mixing some cerakote to match the dd fde rail, then then he thinks (and probably can) paint on the atacs camo. So I may just cerakote EVERYTHING the DD FDE. and then paint the rest so I can change it later if I decide.

I say all black or Gunzilla's color.

mikeith
11-14-12, 19:25
Well it looks like DD FDE it is. They are going to cerakote the upper/lower to match it then going to do the atacs pattern with cerakote by hand on the furniture(or as close to it a possible)

This spring I am doing exactly this. I usually just Krylon it, but this way I'll be able to skip the base coat each time I change the color/pattern while having the added protection of Cerakote and maintaining the flexibility of rattle can.

That looks good. What paint/coating color did you use?

I voted all ATACS. It is shadowy(?) and will break up the outline everywhere.(country, urban, rocky, etc.) Light brown and light gray actually absorbs and reflects the surrounding colors, so if there is a little
(or a lot) of green or fall foliage the ATACS will still blend in. Breaking up the shape and straight lines is the key.
Following is Kryloned with a little green and mud brown added for my locale. I had to bring the rifle out of the foliage so you can see it.

Edited post to add picture of other home painted rifle that is more appropriate to M4 carbine.net and is more towards the ATACS colors.

That looks good. What paint/coating color did you use?

It's Rustoleum 'Deep Forest Green' Camo, only it's more of a medium green, not as dark as I wanted it....but it's different.
