Some dude today told me that the Coast Guard recently purchased a bunch of SR556's. Did I miss something, or am I right in believing that he's full of shit?

I highly doubt that since I was in the Coast Guard and am pretty familiar with how they make acquisitions.

Curious...

Pretty sure they already have enough anchors and replacements for every vessel in the fleet....

Plus I'm sure Ruger would issue a press release if the Coasties bought a bunch of their rifles.

This is way off topic and I apologize for that, but "Coast Guard" just doesn't seem to come up that much.

The Coast Guard does not get the recognition it deserves. The men and women of the Coast Guard are some of the toughest and bravest people alive. Thank you for your service.

I was in 1994-2004 and got out as a BM1. During my time in we used the M16A1.

I serously doubt the rumor. It would be much more likely they went to the current M4.

My dad retired a CWO4 from the USCG in '76 - he said they were still using Garands into the early '70's!

If those Garands were in good working order and the Coastguardsmen were getting solid training with them, good for them! Sometimes you have to make do with what you've have.

I assisted with training for the USCG ME program a few years ago. They were a great group.

M16A2's were general issue with limited numbers of M-4's in use by some units. The rifles I saw were all Colts.

Pistols were SIG P229R DAK's in .40 though I understand units wihich may deploy overseas also still use the Berreta 92 in 9mm.

They still qualify with Garands I thought?

We carry Garands in boot Camp and OCS (CGA). Accession firearms training [qual] is pistol only.

We use M16A2's and MK18's depending on mission. I can't find where any Ruger AR's have been purchased using normal procurement/supply channels. We trial equipment at times so maybe something along those lines is happening---though I doubt it.
