Markm and I were doing the desert shoot this weekend having our fun ringing the steel. Mark mentioned on a previous post how I made an 1150 yrd headshot. We didnt have a phone to take any pictures so we took some today.
Different story this time. I said, Mark I'm going to throttle that mannequin head at 1150 again. I painted the desert all around that little Beeeotch. Then finally handed Markus the 300 and said, you tag it. He freaking punched the head shot then punched the steel.
Cool thing is someone left these in the desert for our 1150 enjoyment.

That's awesome. I found a place up in the north valley here that we were able to get out to 633 meters, GPS measured. Not very easy with an Aimpoint. Waiting for my ACOG to get fixed.
We love the ACOG. GOOD StUFF. WHich one, how far out does it give hash marks? I have some go 8 others 6.

With my 3.5X ACOG, 500 is easy- 600 gets to be challenge, and 700 is a PITA. BUT to have a 3.5 power red dot sight that puts you on 500 all day long is pretty cool.
I didn't believe Pappabear last week when he did it. And I wouldn't have believed I hit it had the head not been spun sideways.
The 208 gr AMAX will make you look good. :cool:
I keep thinking I should just build a 300 Win Mag, but then I'm drawn back to the 6.5 Creedmore and realize it wont kick my ass as much and still shoot the same lol
It's really not very bad at all with the 2 chamber brake from AAC. Less recoil than a .308 with no brake.
Thats pretty awesome. I hunt a lot on a Ranch in the Sandhills and could take shots probably out past 1 mile. Not that I'm capable of that. Though, I would like to take some out to 600-800 yards with my .270 WSM out there.

I didn't even want to take the shot. I got on the plate in 2 and wanted to quit while I was ahead.
But Pappabear is always wanting to push for more.

We sometimes lose context. We'll shoot what I've loaded, most of which Pappabear bought... then run a talley later on....
Holy crap... we just shot $250 worth of ammo. :eek:

You can pay for 308 factory ammo and survive the pain without reloading. But 300WM will break the bank. It's just brutal. Those boxes cost $30 or $40. That shit is crazy painfull. If you don't reload, 308 is the biggest gun you can afford to shoot for most people.
I couldn't swallow the 300 factory ammo, half of which sucks. Blackhills for example. Cost a fortune and shoots 1.5-2.0 MOA in most guns.
But wow, the 300 shines at 800-1400 + yards. It's very alluring.

It's the TA-31 RCO USMC model. The hash marks go out to 800.

I have a 300 that is worn out, 3000 rounds give or take, ready for a new barrel. Never had a round of factory ammo through it. I'm loading some 375 RUM tonight. I doubt I'll ever shoot a round of factory ammo from that rifle. Same with an M1 Rifle, M1A, 30-06 bolt action, 458 Win mag. I have gone years without shooting any factory ammo other than 22.
Never had a round of factory ammo through it.
I love it! Every gun should be so fortunate. ;)

3000 round is very good for a 300 WM. 2000-2500 is the normal life.
A .308 will do more close to 5k.

It's cartridge specific. A .308 bolt gun barrel will outlast a 300WM or .260 rem.
And within each cartridge, you'll typically find that the heavier the bullet the more duell time the flame erosion gets on the throat before the bullet gets its ass moving.

It has to do more with the cartridge. I believe its somethig to do with the correlation of the bullet diameter and the amount of powder used to propel it. The more powder, the faster the barrel wears out.
A 308 has good barrel life because it doesnt use a whole lot of powder. But a 243 has a much lower barrel life even though they use the same case and roughly the same powder.

One of the F class guys I shoot next to replaces his 308 barrel every 2,000 rounds. Yeah, a 300 magnum after 3K rounds is shot out. A really overbore caliber like 30-378 or 7mm RUM is good for 800 - 1000 rounds.
