I need a 20" barrel for my 870. I was wondering if a rifled barreled would have problems with buck or bird shot damaging thr threads? Also I was wondering if anyone knew of a 870 barrel with a breaching block?

the rifled barrel tends to shoot a larger pattern with shot than the smooth bore does. AS far as damaging the rifling, I don't see why it should, the shot never touchs the bore.

thank you, I've never broke down the anatomy of shotgun shell so I didn't know if the shot just left the shell loose or if it stayed in the wad. Anyways I'm looking for a 20" barrel for my 870 and Vang is really not an option so does anyone have any advice that would be good for both slugs and 00 buck.

my HD 870 is a "Special Purpose" 12ga. that came with a 20' BBL, VENT RIB and interchangeable choke tubes with composite stock & foreend. With the addition of a 3 shot mag extension and light this makes the perfect go-to unit for me. I also have an 870 wingmaster and it appears that the bbls are interchangeable. PM me if you need more info.

My 870 12 ga. SP came with a 20" rifled barrel for deer hunting. I bought a 26" Hastings barrel with 3 different chokes plus extended choke for turkey hunting for 120.00. I also bought a Rem 20" IC smooth bore barrel for HD. It can also be used to shoot rifled slugs. (no sabots tho). These barrels can be found for 75.00-100.00. Ask around as alot of ppl have switched to rifled barrels and don't want these. You can end up with a 3 barrel shotgun to use as you need to. Depending on your need, switch barrels.

Don't even bother trying to shoot buckshot through a rifled barrel.

Somehow we ended up with a fully rifled barrel on one of our 870's in the armory. I shot it at 7yds and it would consistently pattern the nine 00-buck pellets in almost a perfect 18" circle.

Imparting a spin on the shot cup subjects the pellets to centriputal (sp?) force which throws the pattern into an open circle.

Love the information guys. I'm looking for mainly HD and a little target practice on the side. The target shooting would be more HD sim and less trap so I was looking at the factory 20" smooth bore with rifle sights. This was suppose to be my fun build for the year, but my wife just let slip that next month I get my Bday present early (Rock Island 1911) so I'll have two pet projects for 2008!

i use my 870P "18 bbl with both buck and slug ammo, i find a smooth bore and Remington's 7/8 (3") sluggers to be quit accurate to 75 yards. and the buck is not to bad at 40 yards "minute of silhouette".
