The aerial shots are coming from our helo. All three of our helicopters are in Austin. The other two are making passenger runs from the hotels to the race. The track is charging customers around $550 each way on the birds. Guess this is not a poor man's sport!

Never heard of that KERS before.

I've heard the steering wheels on those things run about $25K.. and that was several years ago when I saw that.

KERS is like a hybrid system in a Prius or other hippie car, but instead of more range you get more power.

Track looks good on tv, I hope F1 does well this time around.

Qualifying Sat 12:00
Race Sun 13:00

Both live on SPEED Channel in HD. Great track coverage, commentary and interviews - stuff you just can't get by being there.

I understand the desire to see and hear (take your ear protectors) a F1 race live, but as someone who attended every F1 race in the US and Canada in the 70's, I am very content now to watch what I believe is superior coverage in the comfort of my own home. F1 is why I have SPEED Channel!

I hope Hamilton crashes out and throws another temper tantrum. Can't stand him!

ETA: Track is new and very slick. Too bad they couldn't have gotten a few decent races in first before F1 to get some rubber down. Looks like the hard compound tires are not wearing much at all.

Seems like they're planning keeping the coverage about the same. NBC sports also signed Hobbs, Matchett and Diffey:D

Hobbs and Machett are good, not so for Diffey. If he is who I think he is , he sounds like an overly excited little girl. But maybe I am thinking of Calvin Fish instead.

I'm so sunburnt.. and I love Texas.

The track itself is awesome but the trackside stuff is terrible.

They we're charging $200 for parking and in hindsight I should have paid it. The free shuttles from downtown are nice but they drop you off over a mile from the track. It takes my fiancé and I damn near an hour to walk from the shuttle drop off to our seats at turn 11

Absolutly rediculous.

When I went to Indy for F1 in 2005-2007 the track is in the middle of the city and we were able to park in front of the entry gate for $25 and walk to any portion of the track within 15minutes. I know it was an oval at heart but still better thought out than this place. Maybe its because it's not finished. Who knows.

Love the track, hate getting to it.

Love Austin! My fiancé wants to move here. I'm not opposed.

As for the tires. Wonder how much impact the switch from August to November had on tire performance. Willing to bet the harder compounds would have been better in the heat of the original schedule.

I don't recall the original date being in August. Was it? They are in Canada in June, coming back to North America in the middle of the end of the European portion of the season would have never worked. The USGP at Indy always followed the Canadian GP. Thats why the race in NJ was supposed to happen the weekend after the race in Canada in '13.

Perelli brought the Hard and Medium tire because they had no idea how abrasive the track surface would be and they not want to repeat Michallin's mistake from '05. They wanted to make sure the race would happen as planned. Honestly I think they should have brought the Medium and Soft, the track would be too fast for SuperSoft and would overheat them. A lot of teams found it hard to get heat into the Med tire. I would love to see a tire war back in F1 :-).

11-19-12, 22:56
Not sure about August, but I do know they were supposed to be here much earlier in the season than November. May have been June as that would have put then in North America for 2 races behind or in front of Montreal. Even June would have put them into the 100F weather.

Not sure we will see a tire war again. FIA is doing its best to make it a skill and strategy game vs a gadget game.

Nice pics!

200 just for parking?? How much was the beer?

I'm thinking about trying to go next year but I'm not sure about the cost. Maybe the ALMS/WEC double header will be a better option.

Following the race on TV and the live stream was pretty fun. Hopefully F1 gained some new fans and can do well here.

$200 for the 3 day parking pass if you wanted to park onsite. They had free parking at the expo center and centennial park downtown with shuttle buses. Just have to hotfoot it a lot and wait more. I dont drink but beers were $8-9.

I usually cringe at the casual use of this word, but the start of an F1 race is truly awesome.

You've got 24 cars, all capable of going from a dead stop to 100 mph and back to a dead stop again in less than 5 seconds, all going full out when the lights go green.

The peak power operating range of the engines is between 16,000 and 18,000 RPM!

$200 for a 3 day parking pass is outrageous, (MotoGP parking is $60 for the weekend) but it is what it is when they have you by the short curlies. Thankfully there were other options that only cost $30/day or so, but you did have to hoof it from the shuttle stop to the entrance.

I'm wondering how the tentative New Jersey race next season is going to effect Austin attendance and pricing? Im starting to save my pennies for next years tickets. Having gone to the practice session makes me feel like a retard for not buying tickets for this year.

Alex V
11-20-12, 13:09
Had I known about the amount of walking I had to do I would have paid the $200 with a smile.

Parking in Downtown Austin was $20/day anyway. That makes parking at the track only $140 more lol.

The amount of time killed waiting for the bus, on the bus and walking to and from the bus could have been spent enjoying Austin. That upsets me most cause Austin was very nice, what little time we spent there.

If F1 was really all about skill and strategy then they should all be racing one car to take that aspect out of things.

There should be more than one tire manufacturer allowed. Put's more competition and 'strategy' into the race, and doesn't make things so one dimensional in that aspect.

All in all the rules should be a bit more relaxed. They are trying to make things too even. I know the purpose of that but racing is just as much about the cars as anything else. There's so little leeway in design and methods...even the amount of time they get for testing...that I think in the long run fan's would be better served by easing up a bit. Not entirely...but some, and make the manufacturer's side more interesting.

Not sure about attending next year even though I live here. I'd like to but doesn't sound like the parking situation is something I want to mess with. I knew it would be messed up when Austin decided to be 'green', and force people to take shuttles from Austin. I can just take the toll roads out there, and park at the track but ain't gonna pay someone $200 to park a car for a couple days on top of the ticket prices and other misc. expenses nor am I going to give into the Austin enviro fags and take a bus which is WAY more inconvenient for me.

You can come to NJ in '14 lol. Just leave your guns at home lol.

The NJ race will be the same. No place to park period!

This is my plan, my father works for a NYC agency which allows him to park just about anywhere at any time. I will take his permit, drive into the city, park, get on the ferry and go back across the Hudson to Weehawken... the ferry terminal will be in the middle of the pit strait.

Now if that aint ass backwards, I don't know what is. You can hop a ride with us if you want lol. The hotels around here wont be a lot of money lol. We are about 45min from NYC. hahahaha

The whole thing of getting to any event that will hold over 100K people will never be easy, but the COTA peeps sure did not make it any better. I wont hold it against Texas as my 5 days there were awesome, and I love the place.

I miss Indy...

Maybe next year we can get some members here to split the parking, and carpool or something. I'd split a parking fee with someone to do it.

Glad you had a good time in Austin. A lot different than the rest of Texas but has it's own good and bad. I've been to every major city in TX and since we have to live close to one of them I wouldn't want to be anywhere else around here.

Keep us updated on the Jersey track. I don't know anything about it.

Not a fan of Indy races. Hate circle tracks.

At Indy the F1 race used only 1 turn and the main strait on the oval. The rest was infield. No elevation change, far more boring than COTA but a lot cheaper.

Started going through the 1000+ photos that I took. This is the first one I converted from RAW.

Ticket prices aren't out yet for the ALMS/WEC races but I doubt they'll be as high as F1. Hopefully they do some kind of package for the whole weekend since they're racing on separate days. I really want to see the Toyota and Audi hybrids before Grand Am messes with regs.

MotoGP tickets weren't that bad. Paid $133 for seats in the turn 15 grandstands, same tickets that were running $375+ for F1. Parking is $60 for three days. Not bad. Still saving for F1 though. May not happen, but I can hope.

I heard some talk of SCCA club events at COTA, but I'm not sure when these would be scheduled - certainly next season at the very earliest.

This is the first time the opportunity has come up to run on a modern, active F1 track in the US. I'd normally never even think about travelling as far as Texas for an event, but after watching the USGP, I would seriously consider it. What a beautiful course, and paved runoff sure is nice! :)

I wasn't there for the race, but I would have loved to have seen the Ferrari Challenge cars running, just to get an idea of the scale of the track layout in something I can comprehend. F1 cars tend to skew one's perception of the geometry of a track.

Texas region SCCA has an event scheduled for Feb 22-24, 2013 at COTA. Apparently, NASA is working on an early 2013 date, as well as BMWCCA and PCA.

Well, there you go. COTA will be available to both the track day crowd and racers in the near future!
