View Full Version : Buffer/Recoil spring question

I recently built a 14" Green Mountain barrel that was designed for another company making piston uppers. The 2.5" Vortex makes the barrel 16.25".

The gun shoots great, but the gas port looks bigger than my 16" barrel. No functional issues, but I've read that some ARs beat themselves to early wear when the proper recoil spring & buffer aren't used. I'm using a Bushmaster lower, with carbine buffer & standard spring.

The brass gets tossed to the same general area as my other ARs--which leads to my question:

Am I over-thinking this issue? What would I expect to see if the rifle needed a stronger spring or heavier buffer?

Thank you for the help & thanks for all the info. As a long time lurker, I've learned a great deal here.

Piston guns typically have large(r) ports than DI guns. You will need a set of pin gages to get an accurate reading. I would probably use H or H2 assuming that your weapon will cycle with it.
