I want...

1. 30-06
2. Stainless
3. Synthetic stock
4. Iron Sights
5. Durable
6. Not outrageously pricey (Blaser, etc).
7. 3-5 round capacity. Internal magazine, no removable mags.

I can deal with it not being stainless, but I need the rest.

4-6 out of 7, depending on your idea of durable and not expensive. Might be tough to find in the States though... don't know if Beretta imports this one regularly or not.

ETA: Oops, now I see it's a detachable mag. Sorry... tried.

Tikka rifles are all detachable mags. If that's the only hold out, I'd cast that to the side.

I've owned a Tikka Whitetail Hunter before and miss it dearly. Loved the detachable mag.

Yeah, I've never shot a Tikka but on the recommendation of a friend that hunts rough country with one, I would pick one up for sure if I had a need. Seems a fine shooter for not a terrible amount of money.

This is the way I'd go. First two you would have to have sights installed and the last one is a laminate with SS & sights. If you really want irons I'd prefer to have an aperture sight installed over open sights anyway. These are about as tough as it gets without going custom.

Number two is what I want...but no sights. I suspect getting a set installed would cost 1/2 as much as the gun. It seems insane that nobody makes this gun.

I may end up going that route. We shall see.

At an LGS there is Savage 110 in 30-06 with iron sights, 4 or 5 round internal mag, $475. It is not stainless and has a wooden stock but those can be easily changed out. What i dont know is what Savage's durability is. For someone like me who shoots bolt actions a few times a year and less then a 100 rounds Savage is fine (i own a Ruger M77 30-06)

It won't be cheap, but it won't be half the price of the rifle either (I don't think). If the irons are imp to you then why not have the exact irons you want?

Here are a few options there are more if you look
I know some sights are aluminum, some are steel and really just pot metal and some are good steel (so the errornet says YMMV) so you might do some research on materials also.

I am eyeing a Model 70 Ranger. It is 22 inches with iron sights. Pretty cheap and I figure I can get a synthetic stock.

I agree! Greg Bell's question got me thinking about that niche and these are tempting me.

A member here Sturmgewer (spelling?) did a video review of the Gibbs 1903A4 sniper rifle a while back. Good video.

Is that an older model? I couldn't find it on the Winchester page but found some used gun ads for it elsewhere. Can you post a link to what you're looking at?

Between the Winchester and the Tikka, I'd go with Tikka (even though it sports a detachable magazine). Definitely more bang for your buck.

Yeah, my Dad's first hunting rifle was a 1903 Springfield and I always wanted one, but when I finally decided it was time for one my eyes did not agree with the sights and this rifle might just be the ticket as the new rear aperture and sight radius is looking great as I sit here and do dryfire drills with my 10.5

Not stainless, but this is the next rifle on my list:

Now that's what I am talking about:thank_you2:

I picked up the Winchester Ranger. It is an older Model 70 with a featherweight barrel and a cheapo stock. It lloks like I need to figure out how to restock it. I went to the range in Macon today specifically to zero the irons and forgot the damn rifle!

It is very lightweight. Now the new question is....

What Kind of Scope and rings?

I want them to be quick detachable. I will take a variable because I always have the irons to back it up. What is a reasonably light variable that would work well with a lightweight mid-range 06?

Leupold Var III 2.5-8x scope. Leupold or Tally QD base/rings

I second the Talleys. As for optics, I usually choose Leupold because they meet my price criteria in different categories and are still decent enough to depend on. I use a fixed 4x Leupold on one '06 and another has a 6x with the 42 mm. objective. You'd be surprised at the generous eye relief and quickness of the 6x. The 2.5-8 is a very handy scope, also.

A 721 Remington with a replacement stock would do the trick aside from stainless steel. Lima, OH gun show had 3 or 4 last month.

At this point I have about 80 rounds through the Ranger. I scoped it with a Zeiss Conquest and it is a nice little scope. Observations.

1. From a rest the rifle is MOA even with crappy power-point ammo. I am sure someone could wring better accuracy out of it but I buy whatever is cheapest at Wal-Mart.

2. The trigger is too heavy. Need to figure out how to adjust it.

3. I would like to lighten the rifle if there is a syntheic stock that will trim it down. It kicks hard but I don't care.

4. I was shooting at plates at 200 from various positions and it is a nice, accurate rifle. I just need to cut back the trigger weight a bit.
