I'm a new member to this site and wanted to share some pictures of my favorite revolver. As the title says it is the Wiley Clapp edition GP100 from Talo Inc. Fit and finish are top notch, balance and handling are great. Every time I head for the range or the woods this goes with me. It is just pure fun to shoot. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Yes a 3" barrel. I had not owned. A revolver in many years. As soon as shot this one I realized how much I liked them.

What a beauty!

I have a couple of Rugers myself (a SP101 and a Redhawk). I had Gemini Customs tune and port my SP101 and it's pretty sweet. Solid revolvers, no doubt.

I made a holster for it. This was my first attempt at holster making. Made a few mistakes but learned a lot. I'll make another after the holidays when I get a little free time.

Love the concept and execution, but wonder the value of a heavy, short barrel, limited capacity revolver in .357? Now if this was a .44 magnum .....

Six shot revolvers have served folks well for many years. As far as the effectiveness of the 357, I think it will handle my needs just fine

We have one in our shop and I really like it except for one thing; the finish. I can't stand bead-blast finish. Once it get's dirty, it stays dirty. I'd also change out the grips but I can change them fairly easy. Everything else though is pure awesome, especially the sights.

Let me try this again, without raining on your parade -- this same set-up in .44 magnum, regulated for the 300 plus grain hard cast magnum loads, would make a terrific Alaska revolver.

Nice rig!! :D I just upgrade from the BH SA 357 Mag to a brand new GP100 6" 357 mag. I love it's smooth as silk DA and is so much nicer to carry. :D I have my new go every where hunting/carry piece!

Great looking revolver. My mom (believe it or not) has had a stainless steel 4.2" GP100 sitting in her closet for several years. It looks exactly like the one pictured above except the wood grip inserts are smooth. I've always enjoyed shooting it because of how smooth the action is.

But the Redhawk is so gigantic in frame. THIS wheelie in a 5 shot .41 magnum would be must have for me. If that's even possible. That's really a gorgeous GP100 and I'm gonna be Bing'ing the Net shortly to gauge availability and street price. And yet I have no need for one. :D

Tell me about it. I am 6'7" and have large hands. The smaller grips are not really that small. Just a little smaller than stock. To me they are more controllable then the larger grips.

The Clapp edition is a nice setup. I really like the high profile dovetail sights. 3" barrels are, IMO a goldilocks setup for a revolver. The are short enough to conceal, but long enough to give a decent sight radius. Additionally, a 3" barrel gives you enough length to have a full-size ejector rod.

Here's my Chris Peters wrenched-on blued GP100-he did a magnificant job going through the revolver. His work, a set of Millett sights (Orange Bar front, white outline rear) a set of mix-and-match Wolff springs (I went with a 10# mainspring and an 8# trigger return spring, with complete relliability, thanks to Chris' work), and the Ruger OEM small grip (that was standard-issue with the fixed-sight GP100s)(the OEM large one is there as well, but rarely used-both grips have custom Letts laminate inserts) make for a smooth, acurate, durable and reliable revolver. Chris also installed his "+P Powder Eater" terraced/stepped rear ejector star, which significantly avoids any powder/GSR blow-back from tying things up-very nice, since my primary carry and competition loads are .38 Special +P.

I'd go with the 4" if it was an earlier pre-MIM, which is found in the Wiley Clapp. I almost got a Wiley Clapp version via Gun Broker until I learned about the changes to MIM. I know others are fine with it and you may be as well, but I am not in a steel gun.

What do you mean premature wearing? Do the reports you've heard state what kind of conditions the revolver has been put through? Has it been drawn from a holster and re-holstered a lot? How many rounds have been put through them?

Sorry probably misworded that. I meant not very durable, as in finsish wear within 30-50 holster presentations, cylinder wear within 100-300 rounds. I'm just asking since i have seen some threads on this over at the ruger forums, but this was several months ago. Was curious on any m4c members experiences. not nessecarily a deal breaker as i do not mind wear on a carry gun. Just curious

Frankly, it's big and heavy for six rounds of .357 (said as a K-frame fan). It's a full-sized grip with a compact barrel. Also, on mine, the chambers are sticky. I still love it, and, as Askins would say, it's worth running the River with.

Who do you prefer out this way?

SeriousStudent
05-04-14, 19:09
I prefer the lady who smokes pork shoulders on the weekends, and has a laptop with Youtube clips. She's patient and does not rage-hurl firearms across the room. She does the Apex J-frame kit installs on my revolvers. She does all the parts replacement type stuff for me. Taking a side-plate off and swapping parts is stuff she does. Plus, we have pulled pork sammiches. :) But she's not a gun smith, hence my use of the term gun mechanic.

I honestly am not familiar with a good pistolsmith that does work on Rugers, but I can ask around. It would also be a very good topic for a new thread, it would be a good reference for a lot of folks.

SeriousStudent
05-05-14, 21:41
I did some digging, and it appears that a factory DAO hammer is best fit by a real no-fooling trained gunsmith. It also seems that Ruger does not sell them, that you have to hunt them down.

YMMV, but I have been unable to locate through Numrich, Brownells, and the other usual suspects. I have not tried Jack First, as they don't have a website you can order from. Instead, you must call...that seems never to work out for me.

Yes, I have had a singular lack of success. I think I'll put one of my children on the trail. Steak dinner for the child who finds Daddy the gun part he needs.

Need to order a range rig. Safariland 5181 and split sixes for now. I have a JM kydex AIWB on order. I want to try out Jet Loaders. Loved my SL Variants.

So initial impressions of the 5181 are not good. It is really tight. Too tight.

Dang, I'm sorry to hear that, I was thinking about one like that myself. How much retention do you need? Would leather work?

I ordered a leather holster from a fellow in Topeka off Ebay, for something to use until I get a JRC SAA made for mine. If you like, I'll send you the info, I was pleased with what I got for $50.

SS-

I just got it as a general range holster since I prefer AIWB and that's not kosher most ranges. Leather or kydex would be fine. I'm gonna put some time in drawing n reholstering to see if it improves. Otherwise is going back as defective.

I have an oooold Bianchi cyclone and it is an amazing holster. If the current ones are even remotely as good that might be an option.

Nobody waste their money on the Safariland 5181. Ill fitting POS.

How far gun goes in before heavy resistance.

Oh and that's with the tension screw almost totally out.

Excessive force used to fully seat gun in holster. Note the peek a boo muzzle.

Hmmm. the 5181s that I've got (for my Glock 17, FN Hi Power/1911, and the 518 (same concept, but with a thumbstrap {which I removed}) for my Beretta 92 have all fitted and adjusted nicely. While they're not my first choice in a holster, I've found them to be comfortable and serviceable, as well as beaing easy to out on/take off.

I'd discuss any concerns with Safariland-they're quite helpful.

Best, Jon

Take a close look at Wild Bill's Concealment...He's a nice guy with great products. I have the Speed Scabbard for my WC GP100, 386 NG, CZP01 and a fusion paddle (which is the Speed Scabbard modified to a G-Code paddle) for the PPS. Good sturdy no-BS simple holsters.

I'm looking to buy a Talo GP100, but I'm trying to pick between the blued or stainless. Is either finish anymore prone to rust? I do clean my guns, but would just like to know if there's any advantages of one finish over the other.

Thanks

Stainless will be less prone to rust

Got to handle the match champion the other day and I liked the lack of full length underlug and the grips were fantastic feeling. I think it could be another alternative to the Wiley Clapp as the barrel is only an inch longer. I hope to pick one up in the future (unless the money goes to a pre-lock pre-MIM S&W that is).

You do realize the GP100 now uses MIM components?

So I am underwhelmed by Safariland CS. I sent them pics. They offered an exchange, exchange for different model or refund. When I chose refund they wouldn't.

I ordered a Garrett Industries Silent Thunder with standard kydex belt loop.

Yes I am fully aware

In my mind it goes Old S&W > Any Ruger (without internal lock) > Current S&W

I refuse to buy one of the internal lock S&W's, I think they are overpriced and just plain inferior quality compared to the older ones

Well then, we are on the same page. I would forego a gun before purchasing a lock equipped S&W.

We also have roughly the same grading scheme, with the exception that I don't necessarily rate the old S&W above better specimens of Ruger.

I just wanted to make sure you weren't surprised by the MIM in Rugers--happened to me early on with S&W. I don't know how it will hold up, but the MIM trigger on my Match Champion is actually pretty smooth and slick.

Having had outstanding reliability from several lock/mim S&W's, and having had plenty of pre lock/pre mim ones, I have to disagree. But it's cool, rock on with what makes you happy.

FTR I disable the lock on every revolver that I have ever had with it.

My 4.2" SS GP100 has long been my favorite revolver.

As for the comments regarding Safariland holsters, that's what I use with my GP100, and they fit like a glove together.

I've trekked miles and miles through woods and mountains with that combo countless times. Comfortable, secure, and smooth to operate.

I liked mine enough that I tracked down a second one for my son. He would put me in the poor house shooting mine. I like that Silent Thunder holster, I have been looking for the right holster that one looks just about perfect.

Mine are SS, I like the blued and the brass bead is nice. I need to hunt one of those down.

I purchased a Blued 3" GP100 TALO/WC a couple of months ago. I found one on Va Gun Trader and had it shipped to my LGS, all included $700 (price, tax, shipping and transfer)
My initial impression was BANK VAULT... I have been shooting "modern" revolvers for over 30 years (nearly exclusively S&W), this is my first GP100. Lockup and timing are great. The sight picture is an order of magnitude better than that of any of my K frames ever were (51 year old eyes). Cases from the cylinders did stick a little at first, seems I have worn them in as all cases drop free know. The grips are huge, as everyone else, I am keeping an eye peeled for a compact set. I did try a set Pachymaer Gripper grips, they are ok. So far I have shot about 300 rounds of 38spl and close to 200 rounds of 357 magnum. WWB 38Spl is a pure joy to shoot, Blazer Brass 158 grn SWC and JHP 357 magnum is not uncomrfortable to shoot at all. The sights are setup for 158 grn 357 magnum at 25 yards. Still need to try it with BB 180grn HCGCFP rounds. The trigger is very smooth and crisp, it is also of what I consider managable service weight. Was very nice out of the box, cleaned an lubed with FireClean, it got even smoother with a little dry firing. Very easy to stage the trigger firing double action.
The only weakness so far is the finish and disassembly. I have a prawl line already, but so do all revolvers and starting to see holster wear. Thousands of dry firing rounds and hundreds of practice draws have contributed to this finish wear. I have yeat to be able to completely disassemble. I cannot get the grip fram to release even after reading the directions, videos and trying different tools to depress the spring. For holsters, local kydex guy and a local leather holster maker both hooked me up. Heavy but carries well, OWB 3-4 o'clock on a PROPER leather gun belt. I did a local action match with in the kydex holster. 5 stages and I was happy with the revovler. The brass bead is quick and easy to pick up for fast shots. I could stage my shots when I needed to make the precise hits. Reloaded from HKS 686 speedloaders....I need more practice.
Great revolver, absoluletly trust it for HD, open carry and concealed carry not a problem with a good holster and proper gun belt. I am 5'9", 230 and carry about 4 o,clock in a leather pancake style holster (local guy) and Bianchi leather gun belt. An untucked dress or work shirt covers nicely. Great revolver for an average joe like me.
Thanks for all the previous posts. Hope my observations help.

Disassembly can be tricky in knowing how much force to apply. It is pretty easy to do once you get the hang of it. I haven't cracked open a gp100 in almost a year but I remember that I needed a tool for leverage to remove certain parts.

I am interested in seeing a picture of your belt setup if you don't mind sharing, it sounds like it looks great

Just picked up a 3in Stainless GP100. I'm in love with it so far. Going fly fishing in Montana next week and wanted something with a bit more ass than my 9mm. Going to pick up some Buffalo Boar 180g Hard Cast bullets from Cabelas today. The .357 was a compromise for sure but I can conceal carry it when I'm offer the river unlike a 5.5 .44 Redhawk. Now to just find a good holster and some smaller grips (it came with hogue overmolds).

Bought a NIB WC GP100 SS recently. My biggest question/concern before buying this gun was how would the matte finish hold up and clean up. However, after 200 rounds the WC's matte surface took on a smoky tint that would not come off. I tried CLP Breakfree, Hoppes No.9, EEZOX, Outers Nitro - none of these cleaners removed all the powder residue. Then I tried Flitz polish. I had pick up a free sample at the Blade Show. It instantly removed the residue with just light pressure applied and the finish now looks like new again. Flitz is advertised to be nonabrasive, and it did not alter the matte sheen. I rubbed in on then off before it dried so it did not leave a white film like dried car wax. I've also found Flitz to be great for cleaning up knife blades, especially black DLC coated blades like my Spyderco Para Military 2. Hope this helps others trying to quickly clean their matte SS surfaces. I wonder how Flitz would work on a black WC gun?

Im picking up a 4 inch stainless or the wiley clapp next. I love the size of the 3 inch and the sights. But something about that 4 inch full underlug and with the bright stainless is just sexy. I wish the wc came in standard finish. I understand the matte finish for carry but this is just going to be a farm/range/back country dog walker. Has anyone gave the same wc a polished finish?

There is 1 known factory polished WC. It was a "how can we fix this situation" for a customer.

If you like 4" tubes and the Novak sights look at the Match Champion.

OK I hate you guys for bumping this thread. I've been jonesing for one of these for a long time. I even know the Ruger part number: kgp141. <- Stainless, GP100 series, 4" barrel, don't know the last # is for though. I like the full length under lug, 4" but really like those Talo rosewood/rubber grips. Do not post any more pics. My wallet can't stand the pain.
