I have a 2nd Arsenal SLR 106 (5.56mm) and I am considering a picatinny rail set up for the front end. Wanting to install a red dot sight, light and forward grip.

I have looked at the Krebs system and Midwest Industries. Krebs seems to have a slot for the cleaning rod, but other systems seem to omit this. Anyone have any experience with these systems or other set-ups you could recommend?

Check out a new rail by Damage Industries. Don't have any experience with them, but they look pretty solid.

Mission First Tactical also has a modular handguard for the AK called the Tekko, http://www.missionfirsttactical.com/Info/AK47_2/TEKKO-Polymer-AK47-Integrated-Rail-System or http://www.missionfirsttactical.com/Info/AK47_2/TEKKO-Plymer-AK47-Loer-Integrated-Rail-System. I haven't tried it yet, but it is on my short list, along with the Damage Industries rail, as soon as the cowitness gas tube becomes available. I run UltimAKs on most of my AK's, so the Mission First lower handguard is something I am keen on trying out.

If you insist on running optics out front there is really only one way to go: Ultimak.

It's been the proven solution for years.

+1 for the Ultimak. Well worth the price.

Is Ultimak still the way to go? My SLR needs something... I'd rather just replace the top end, if that is possible.

The way for what?

What is your intended purpose?

I have a Russian AK9 handguard and an UltimAK on my SLR-107 and they work extremely well. I have the MFT Tekko on another rifle and it is nice, but you have to use it with their upper handguard, which doesn't allow for your optic to co-witness and you can't use an UltimAK with it because of the location of the holes to attach the upper handguard.

I have been using an AK300 for my optic on this rifle, but I am thinking about grabbing another AK9 handguard, so I can put my other UltimAK on there.

96SS, I want to mount an Aimpoint T1 on there... Ultimak sounds good; Surefire does too but it seems like more than I need.

Surefire?

I have a 106 with Ultimak top rail and bottom tri-rail. I bought it used that way. The top rail is really nice except you can't really shoot thumb over bore without your thumb getting seriously warm pretty quickly, since the top rail is part of the gas tube. Your thumb will also occlude the T-1. (The T-1 will co-witness with your irons on the Ultimak using the factory mount.)

I left it as is with nothing on the tri-rail except some Magpul XTM covers to keep help my fingers to stay off the gas tube and a QD attach point, though I could put a VFG on if I desired. The AK family tends to be nose heavy anyway, and my 106 is really nose-heavy. If I wanted to mess with it, I might take the tri-rail off, but I'm not sure where I'd attach the sling if I did, so I'm leaving it. It sits folded up in a bedside drawer for things that go bump, and is a fairly compact and bombproof solution without being too expensive should something happen to it.

My two cents.

Surefire?

Surefire used to make an AK specific rail system (M83), but it hasn't been available for a couple of years. They are nice, however the upper rail is positioned above the rear sight block/rear sight, so you are not able to co-witness your optics.

It's another vote for the Ultimak.

I'm still stuck on the Arsenal Handguard, ultimak, micro, and Surefire/Vltor Light combo. It works, and works well. Why change it?

I've only used an Ultimak but was impressed. I've used one with a sparc and more recently a T1. It was low profile and light.

I've used the Ultimak with an Aimpoint micro on a 5.56 Bulgarian Krink without issue for a few years. It does get hot though.
