Picked up a new Savage model 10 FCP HS precision in 308. What weight bullet would you suggest for reloading? The rate of twist is 10 and the barrel length is 24". I will be using this rifle for long range work out to 1000 meters. Thanks.

175SMK

What is the slowest rate of twist that you would recommend for this weight projectile for 0-1,000m shooting?

A 1 in 12 will do it ... but many folks are much more comfortable with at least a 1 in 11.2 (i.e., Remington 700 5R Milspec) or a 1 in 10 to ensure bullet stabilization near the supersonic/subsonic shelf at distance.

With that said, plenty of folks at SnipersHide shoot the 175-gr SMK out of a 1 in 12.

The rest of this I'm typing because this damn website won't let me make a concise post consisting of only 4 characters.

1 in 10 to ensure bullet stabilization near the supersonic/subsonic shelf at distance.

Rubbish. Stability through transonic range has very little to do with gyroscopic stability and much more to do with bullet design.

Considering a launch velocity of 2550, which is a slow 20" or fast 18" barrel, a 175SMK is traveling roughly 1070fps at 1000yds. At that velocity the bullets is still very much spin stabilized out of either twist.

1:12 twist 64,200RPM
1:10 twist 77,040RPM

Higher launch velocities are the norm, which would increase RPM even more. The main reason for wanting 1:10 is to be able to run subsonic, or run larger(longer) pills such as the berger's or 208 Amax.

That being said, my preference is to 1:10. It's there in case I need it for something other than 175's.

I shoot a Savage model 10 FCP HS precision. 175 SMKs work nicely. I run mine on top of a charge of Varget in Winchester brass and CCI primers.

I was thinking the 175 smk might work well, even was thinking about trying a box of 190 smk. But had never considered the 208 amax or the bergers. I thought the heavier bullets would stay stable longer with the faster 1:10 twist barrel between 800-1000 yrds. I'm going to pickup a few boxes of each and run them thru the chrono. Thanks.

Timely post! I got a 10 FCP HS a few weeks ago myself. After I "ballistically remove" some 168gr Sierra's from their cases, I think I'll give 175 gr's a try.

On the recommendation of two experienced 1000 yard F class shooters, I bought a Savage 10FCP HS Precision rifle and Federal 175g GMM ammunition. They told me that once I have a collection of once fired match brass, I can expect to shoot even better with reloads using the 175g Sierra Match King bullet.

My rifle shoots better with 168g bullets out to 200 yards. I was told the 175g bullets don't "go to sleep" until they get past 300 yards. When I shot a F class match in October I shot 175g bullets. The guys who were kicking my butt were shooting 175g bullets as well.
