Hey guys,

I am starting with Irons, but I am already looking to get a new scope/red dot for my new Noveske Recce. Any opinion on red dot over scope style? What are you guys using for short to long distance shots? I know there is alot of different manufactures out there, but I want to be able to shoot at 25yds and out to 500yds accurately, meaning at under 100yds 2-3" and at 500yds chest size consistant hits. Budget is give or take depending on the specifics. Much thanks in advance! I have read quite a few post on here, but wanted to get specifics. Jeff

I'd start with an Aimpoint and a Larue mount.

Depends on your budget. Lots of options.
Aimpoint with a magnifier. Or a variable 1-4 or 1-6, ACOG 3x or 4x.

Aimpoint Pro/ magnifier
NF 1-4, SWFA 1-4,TRIJICON TR24 (triangle), SWFA 1-6
ACOG TA31,TA33

You really need to tell us how much at what distance youll be shooting. If your only shooting out to 500 once a year, with the average being 0-200, any red dot would be great for you. Or if you intent to shoot 3 gun/hunt/ ground hog plink, a variable 1-4/6x would be the ticket.

Get exact in your actual budget and % of use for what purpose.

Strictly target accuracy shooting from 25 yard to 500 yard.

Midway USA sells a Nikon 1-4 with the BDC reticle. It has cross hairs for 100 yards and dots for 200-600 yards beneath it. I have shot up to 300 yards with it and have had success.

As soon an I can find a safe place to shoot it out to 600 yards at the place I shoot, I will test out the 600 yard mark on the scope.

I would try that VS an Aimpoint with no magnification. The scope is 269 at Midway and a good mount will cost you around 100. I'm using the PEPR mount.

In that case get a variable power 1-Xx with a fixed mount. The cheapest good scope seems to be the burris MTAC at 400$,and at the top is something like a swarofski 6Zi or the Mk8 cqbss . There is a chart with variables somewhere on here.you also might not need a scope that does true 1x, so that will open or close more options based on your wants and needs.

Nightforce 2.5-10x32 for me, but you will find almost as many opinions as there are optics and budgets. There is no perfect answer, but you get what you pay for with optics.

1x Red Dots win at close range and 10x (or more) is superior at distance. Middle road is a 1-4, 1.x-6 and so on.

I'm with most others here, get a good 1-4 or 1-6 and that should cover all your requirements.

500 yard shots will be stretching the limits of the 1-4 so if you plan on doing a lot of shooting at 500 yards spend the extra and get a nice 1-6.

You could always get more than one.

Most of us have QD mounts but don't remove them.
Pick up a used red dot or eotech and a decent variable scope with QD mounts. If your patient, you can come out ahead when comparing to some of the 1-6's.

You can swap out optics when they suit your needs best. Plus you'll figure out whether or not you really need anything more than a red dot.

The TA11, TA31, or TA33 ACOGs would fit that bill great in my opinion.

I use a CQBSS on a KAC SR-25. I use off angel irons for anything inside 100 yards and the scope for anything further.

For a 14.5" Noveske I went with the HAMR and a DeltaPoint Reflex sight. That is a good setup. It's just different enough from ACOGs so I have to get use to new things, but I love Leupold glass. If on LaRue made a QD mount for it I would be in heaven.
