Bad idea. You can find 17 mags thru FN's estore around $40.

Bolt catch will damage your bolt face with this thing, design flaw that needs to be worked out before I would ever consider investing in one.

You would need to modify the lower for pmags. Or buy one of the 2-3 that they're selling to fit pmags.

A few guys have modified fal mags, I'm going to try that one of these days since I have some a round and no gun to use them in anymore.

Apparently it can be done. There's a 2-part video detailing the process. I suppose if you have the tools it's worth a try, but will you stake your life that they'll work 100%? I guess for the range they'd be alright.

Check out Rainer Arms. They carrey a mod lower that is not a regestered part like the upper. It will allow you to use PMags. A lot better than grinding down a good mag.

I pick up my SCAR 17 tomorrow and grabbed 6 new mags from the FNH Store last week for 40 bucks each and they threw in a free T-Shirt.

Don't take this wrong but I think only a Idiot would take a 2700-3000 dollar rifle and try "rigging" mags that are NOT made for it because you're too cheap to buy the correct Magazines.

Oh...and nice Video.... Man with a Roto Tool...look out!!

I might not have used the word "idiot":), but I'm in complete agreement with this.

Really? How is that?

Just people parroting incorrect information, again. If it gets repeated enough, it becomes fact. Same with the pmag causing issues in the 16. And yet no one can show a single confirmed example.....

I would hope this isn't a case where people are talking without actual knowledge or from having seen/ used/ handled one. I'm also aware of the "shill factor" which tends to be present in the online weapon forums.

That being said, if there is an actual issue that was some how missed by everyone else, I would like to know what it is.

The SCAR 16 issue with PMAGs is true - Magpul has addressed it publicly, and modified the PMAG 30 M3 geometry to eliminate this issue. I'm not sure if the same issue exists with the PMAG 20LR being used with aftermarket SCAR 17S lowers.

That's not what I'm saying. The pmag, in addition to others, do cause the BHO to slightly raise. That's been proven.

Magpul also publicly said that they have yet to see a reported or confirmed case, military and civilian, of a pmag causing damage to a SCAR bolt.

It was all conjecture and worry fanned by the internet.

 Where is the damage? All he did was show a video illustration that corresponds to all the pictures floating around.

I'll be glad to change my tune if anyone can show confirmed damage. Again, for all the .mil and civilian SCARs out there, no one has proven this to be a legitimate problem. Supposition turned into fact because it kept getting repeated.

I particularly enjoyed his Windham video:(

ETA: Not making those silly faces at you FTN but rather the video. All he did was a make a video of something another guy already pointed out. Its just guesses but somehow turned into fact.

The sand down guy, Wagnasty, is known as Dr. Dremel and he was the first guy I knew to make a PMag lower for the 17. Airborne. Those guys have no respect...

The Handl alloy lower is testing out pretty good. There are reports of some bolt catch and mag catch issues, but they seem remote. The FDE Handl in not anodized, but coated. Alan Handl seems like a good guy.

There is another alloy lower due next year from Jim Elmazi, former DSA guy who engineered the SA58 lower. It has a few more features than the Handl like an AR grip geometry, QD mounts and will be anodized.

PMags are not recommended for use in the 16. This is fully vetted. If you need proof, go shooting with your SCAR. They are terrible.

I thought these were supposed to be released in Sept/Oct. Is it still in testing?

They are trickling out. I was going to buy the other lower still in development but as I have 10 FN mags, I'm in no rush.

I think there are "no confirmed reports" of PMAGs damaging SCAR bolts because most people either (1) stop using them quickly as they won't work without a 10 second modification - the area in the rear of the magazine is curved vice square and the SCAR bolt catch engages further to the left side of the magazine compared to the AR platform, (2) hear about the issue early and either don't use PMAGs or mod them.

Most 16 just don't work with unmodified PMAGs, I think it's a more rare combo where the bolt catch is just slightly raised, still allowing the weapon to function but cause some cosmetic damage to the bolt. And as the problem is widely known now, most just avoid it. Personally, I sold most of my PMAGs, keeping only 4 - 30s and 8 - 20s. I really like the 20s for bench shooting, and 2 30s are modified and in a Maglink as my grab magazine for the SCAR or Noveske AR. the rest of the PMAGs are mod'ed as well but just beater range mags. I personally prefer D&H and FN factory metal mags in the 16 and have a bunch of those.

WRT the 17, you can modify the lower as Wagnasty did. SCAR lowers are pretty cheap if you can find them (@$60), but like I said, I prefer factory FN 17 mags. Obviously recent events make them hard to find, but hopefully this comes to pass. Either way, 10 mags should last me awhile. I've only used 4 thus far and as they have been thourghly tested, I'll open two more for range mags and have 4 spares. I'll pick up another 6 if prices come back to reality.

My SCAR must be the exception to the rule. I primarily use unmodified pmags, since 2010, and I've had zero failures or damage.

Sorry for the misleading wording. What I mean't is that the users who have received them are generally happy, exceping a few reports of bolt catch problems.

As far as Pmags and the 16, check this:
