I was going to get N-135...but something (don't know what) changed my mind...I'm gonna give this a try with Barnes 62 grain Triple Shock bullets and see what I get. I been pondering on what powder to use for a while...I guess I decided to go with a faster powder because of the short barrel. I can't find much reload data...but with similar bullet weights and burn rates...it would seem that 21.5 grains should be a safe start load, I used the recommended start loads of IMR 3031 (21.5 grains) and AA2230 (22 grains) with 62 grain bullets to come up with that...what do you think???

Hornady 7th edition manual lists the start load for a 60 grain bullet as 19 grains of 10x and a max load of 21.8 with the 60 grainer for a velocity of 3000fps.
Their test rifle was a Rem 700 with 1/12 twist

You may want to back off of that 21.5 grain start that you have in mind. I assume your putting it thru a much faster twist than 1/12 and you've got 2 more grains of bullet weight which will probably boost pressures.

That's the only info I can find in my books that's close to what you have in mind.
10x wouldn't have been my first choice, but it will be interesting to know how it works for you.

10x wouldn't have been my first choice

Wasn't mine either...but something told me to try it. I like experimenting anyway, thats the fun in reloading and I can use the powder for my other 223,s if it don't work in the AR. Thanks for the info.:)

Don't nominate me yet...I haven't loaded a single round. I was waiting for some info from somebody who had used it. I saw Alliants data...and compared it to a few reloading manuals. I've never cared for Alliants reload data. And just because they only list it for 60 grain and lighter bullets, don't mean it can't be used for anything else...it just means be careful.

The Barnes bullet is a banded bullet...designed to reduce friction and increase velocity...that also reduces pressure a little.

Anyway, thanks for your concern, and for the record it is best to follow the published data. I always start low and work up...but sometimes when you're doing something thats not published, you have to fish a little to find where low is....sometimes too low is worse than too high...243 with slow powders for example.

I doubt I'll be ready for any 335....Reloder 15 is my next choice.

Alliant also showed a load for a 60 grain bullet...with a 22 grain max.
The 10x may be too fast, if it is, I have other 223 guns I can use it in. I'm just trying to get all the fps I can without beating up my AR or throwing its timing off...that 16 inch barrel gets 2850 fps with 55 grain factory loads...if I can safely get 2700 fps out of it with that Barnes bullet...I'll be happy.

22 grains Reloder 10x is the listed max load for a 223 chamber...it got 2614 fps from my 16 inch chrome lined barrel, and failed to lock the bolt back (short stroked).
They fed fine...but would not lock the bolt back...and its not a mag problem.

I wonder how much more Reloder 10x my 5.56 chamber will hold...22 grains didn't flatten any primers...I might try 22.5 and 23 grains next week.

EDIT: I failed to mention that this was with a Hornady 60 grain V-MAX bullet seated to 2.255 OAL.

Another thing I forgot to mention about those loads with Reloder 10x...I loaded 10 rounds....8 of them chrono'd 2614 fps....the other 2 were 2612 fps.

That may be the most consistent powder I have ever used.

Or you can use it for the 6.8 SPC when your ready for that caliber or if you do own a few 6.8 SPC rifles, you did not waste your money on it.

My Speer manual has a 62 grain BT load in with 2230 listed. The low is 22 gr and the high is 24. At 24 gr the mzl vel is 2975. Hope that may help a bit.

Barnes 62 grain TSX bullet
Winchester brass
Federal 205M match primers
23 grains of Reloder 10x
OAL = 2.25

2,850 fps.

This load flattened the primers a little.

The Reloder 10X works great with 50 grain Nosler partition bullets...cycles my gun just fine...and it pushes the bullets pretty fast too.

23.5 grains = 3115 fps
