Hi folks, checking in. I've typed and deleted my intro about a hundred times and it is never right. New lady here. Picked up a Windham Weaponry MPC at Cabelas. Was looking for an AR15 for a while. Recent events finally tipped the scales. My husband and I intend this for use at land/lease for coyotes and hogs. Will probably see some time at the range too. It's not an HD gun. I do have a sidearm I prefer for that instead, among the selection available.

One major thing with me and rifles - I don't have use of my left arm. Broke my neck and shoulder in a vehicle accident in college and was paralyzed. Never regained my arm but otherwise I'm doing well. So I shoulder the rifle with one hand. I prefer to be on the ground so that took priority for feature selection. I can rest any rifle while in the stand.

We ultimately decided on an AR15 as the hunting rifle purchase because of it's platform flexibility. Since I require a more considerations for equipment/tools we thought this was the best option. My requirements were a lightweight, carbine-18" length, semiauto with a youth size length of pull. That's a tall order when you get down to it. I never found the right traditional rifle and an AR15 was suggested. After I shouldered a few I was hooked.

Well, I guess that is my basic story. I have done a lot of reading as far as learning the features and what makes these things tick. I realize from my reading that WW doesn't fit the bill for a lot of folks and that's ok. I'll run it, evaluate and make changes as necessary. I'm a 1911 fan so I'm familiar with swapping parts, upgrading, modifying, etc. That reminds me, I should have put some AR15 tools on my Christmas list. Wonder if it is too late?

Ok, I'll try to read and search more than I ask dumb questions. Yall have a good night.

Thanks warpig, will do. Also thank you for your service. My husband is USN with 11yrs in; currently deployed and on the ground. I see your Colt avatar. I believe that's what they're toting around out there. The shopping panic is incredible (though I don't think I helped the situation). I waited in line 3hrs to check out. This seems worse than 2008, but at least I can find 45acp and 9mm. I can't even find .223. And for that I'm a bit jealous of my husband, they manage to scratch up some for a little practice. He makes sure to tell me so. What a guy lol

Welcome to M4C. There are some excellent resources, on checking out your AR. The good thing is, you can do a lot of them yourself with minimal tools and expense.

Those are three threads that really helped me learn things.

Again, welcome, and good luck with your shooting.

Oh, and one other thing. There are some good resources here in Texas, regarding training, people and shooting ranges. Depending on your location, there are also some folks that might be able to lend you a hand with AR-specific tools as well.

Thorough links, thank you. So far I've spent more than a few afternoons sitting in front of the laptop with my gun (man, I need a name for it) disassembled and comparing parts.

Here is what I've done already if the readership doesn't mind me walking through my 'book report' :)

1) Check the carrier key for proper staking. - check

2) Check the extractor spring and insert to insure that the insert is black. - check

http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/8880/extractorinsert.jpg

3) Check the receiver extension end-plate for proper staking. -check. It is not staked. Read the how to and can get that done with my spring loaded punch. I have not done it yet as I'm waffling between replacing the extension tube now or waiting. I don't want to stake and then take it right off and muck up the thing. I'd like to get into that once and be done with it (common sense says replace tube, lady)

4) Buy an "H" buffer if your carbine doesn't have it.
-check. No H buffer. Will grab one on the next order I put in.

5) Buy a properly tested, staked, constructed bolt carrier group (BCG) with the proper extractor insert. The bolt itself should be Magnetic Particle Inspected (MPI), Shot Peened, and Proof Fired. You can buy a top quality BCG from Bravo Company, G&R Tactical or LMT for around $130. You can either change out to this BCG right away, or use the one that came with your rifle until it breaks and then switch it out. The choice is yours.- check. I plan to run this BCG and go from there.

That there are. I'm a member of our forum shooters group and have a few of them closer that are knowledged(word?) in the AR15. I'm already planning a range day with one. My range offers some AR15 classes for different experience levels. I'm thinking of taking one of those as well.

I appreciate those links. I'm certain I will be referencing them early and often.

you are on a better road than Most :) I am glad to see you here trying to Learn and not justifying your Purchase as so many others are.
you have the right Mind set in becoming better with your weapon and improvements to what you own .

I applaud you for reading the Info and outlining a Plan .

WarpigM-4 is right. You're already more proactive than 98 percent of the folks that own an AR.

There is a ton is excellent information here. I did the same thing you did at first, just read and read.

That's terrific that you are planning to get some training. There are two guys I have trained with here in Texas that I can personally recommend:
