Hello,
i finally was able to buy y first Colt, as 6920mp. I am wanting to add a Daniel Defense rail and want to keep it light and quick. my question is: for those of you who have shot the colt without an aluminum rail, then added one, did you notice a big difference in the speed of the gun? I am trying to decide wether or not to go with a 7" rail or go with the 12" that wraps around the front fixed sight. I prefer the 12" rail on my DD AR-15 for mounting options, but am wondering if I should just stick with the 7" configuration.

I prefer a little more rail space than the 7" offers. I like the FSP rails from DD. I would also look into Centurion. Light, strong and free floating.

I had the "standard" handguards on two BCM uppers. I went with the DD 7" Omega rail on both and love it. Some people prefer the longer rails, I prefer shorter ones. They work fine for me and that is where my hand wants to be anyway.

I don't notice any difference in "speed". The new rail just gives me a place to attach stuff.

The longer rail is nice if you reach out further or need to mount items further out/have a lot of things to mount. Otherwise, the 7" rail is nice. I'm still a mag well holder, so rail length/space isn't as critical for me in that aspect. I love Centurion C4 and DD rails, both are great quality.

I don't notice any real 'speed' difference between my 7" C4 on my 6920 and a longer RIS II M4A1 rail on my 14.5"/pinned fs BCM carbine mutt.

You are going to want more than 7" of rail. I recommend that you look at the Centurion Arms C4 rails. Incredibly light, with the cut-out for the FSB and a no-brainer to install.

I agree. I have one coming for an FSB barrel. I like the DD lite rail, but the Centurion is preferred.

I think I am going to go with a 12" rail since that is what I am familiar with on my DD V5. Now, why is the Centurion so liked? It's between that and the DD.

I've been looking at 12" FSB rails also. I've been looking at the Centurion C4 rail but since I don't have tons of stuff to bolt on I'm looking at the Troy Delta. Depending on your needs, the Troy Delta might be worth looking at. I've been monitoring this (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=111986) thread to see what guys are saying.

Centurion uses a standard barrel nut instead of the proprietary DD. This will keep you from having to remove your barrel but.

The Centurion has integrated QD mounts.

If you have longer arms, longer rail.

The wrap around models are sweet because you can pop a surefire weapon light on the front, and its very nice and keeps the weight down with a light.

It wont feel heavy. They be nice ;)

Thanks guys. I am guessing that I will have to cut off the Delta ring and hand guard cap. The question is, if I go with the 12" FSB rail, won't I have to cut off the sling mount under the FSB?

I started with a 7.0 Omega on my 6920... It now has a 12.0 Lite and it has worked out better for me.

I'm drawn to the Troy Delta because it uses the delta ring of the rifle instead of having to cut it off. The sling mount on my 6920 would have to be removed to accomodate the rail.

I'm waiting for a Centurion C4 Carbine Cutout to come available for my 6920. I'm really going to try and wait for one. But if I find a DD RIS carbine cutout before I may move on that. I shot a buddies with the Carbine cutout rail and noticed no difference in how quick it would move to target, but did notice a huge improvement in the fit of the rifle for me.

Best thing you can do is shoot the rifle bare with no accessories or upgrades and get a good feel for it and what you need to change for it to fit your body mechanics, specifications, etc. After that I'd start looking at what rail, grenade launchers, and so on!

New?

DD RIS II M4A1 FSP Carbine, FDE. (https://www.primaryarms.com/Daniel_Defense_M4A1_FSP_Rail_Interface_System_FDE_p/dd-8030-fde.htm)

DD RIS II M4A1 FSP Carbine, Black. (http://dsgarms.com/ProductInfo/DD-8030-BLK.aspx)

Both dealers are good to go, prices are really good for these, and they were in stock as of this reply. (I am not affiliated with either dealer other than being a customer.)

FWIW, You don't have to cut off either of those parts.

Really? I want the rail to fit flush with the upper instead of having the gap where the ring is. I'm talking of the Centurion rail.

All it takes to remove that sling mount is removal of the rivet.

On rails that use set screws, are there any issues with them marring the barrel?

DasBulk

Marring is a fact of life for non tipped screws. A tight lockup on a part thats going to see alot of heat generally requires steel on steel.

Im a TRX fan. Having just installed one on my 6920 last week, Im finding it hard to find a fault. Ive yet to fire mine with it. But it feels so much nicer just handling it. I have shot friends rifles with TRXs and loved it so Im not totally ignorant to it.
I don't personally see a need for four full rails. They add weight and will be, more than likely, covered with plastic.
For the price, a TRX is stupid hard to beat and you can put the rails where you want them and leave the rest of it slick. And did I mention, they're stupid light weight?
Just my opinion of course. Daniel Defense and Centurion are still awesome rails and if I needed four full rails. I wouldn't hesitate to buy. Partial to Centurions cutouts myself, if I wasn't going to loose the FSB.
I took a grinder to my FSB, then blued and oiled it. Solid.

I'd love to have that rail if they had the FSB cut out.

They sorta do. The Delta I think leaves the FSB but it mounts slightly different IIRC.

Do you NEED the FSB?

No, I don't need it, but want to keep it. I don't have a rifle with one anymore(except this one), so I thought I'd leave it alone.

Ah, that one. I wasn't sure they still made it. DD doesn't even show it on their site.

You're correct,Sir. If I found a used one I'd bite. But the centurion, when they ship more, may be the best option if buying new.

I have a C4 (reg carbine) and an RIS II (M4A1) (I must have said that earlier... feels like deja vu :p ) and I wouldn't hesitate to go with the C4, quality stuff for sure. You can't go wrong with either, of course.
