View Full Version : The TRP is ready to coat... Pix
The TRP is ready to coat. No more grinding, polishing, shaping, etc.
The stuff I did aside from the obvious cosmetic stuff was:
Full Cylinder and Slide ignition kit.
Extra Wilson extractor fitted for when the stocker wears out.
EGW oversize FP stop fitted to eliminate extractor clocking.
EGW Single Side Safety
Wilson Beavertail fitted cause the stock one was hollow and couldn't be ground on much.
S&A standard MSH
10-8 Slide Stop
10-8 Mag Release
VZ square bottom grips which I then contoured to my liking.
Obviously, nothing wrong with most of the stock stuff in the TRP but I'm a freak so I figured why not. The EGW Firing Pin stop is IMO necessary as the stock one is really undersize. The ergonomic stuff was purely personal choice. The ignition kit is just because Cylinder & Slide's stuff is beautiful.
I also polished the breech face, feed ramp, barrel throat and all that. When it gets coated I'll have to make sure the guy who's doing it doesn't blast those. I'll most likely mask the breech face where the rounds slide up and down and coat the upper section as well as the feed ramp. Any of you master pistolsmiths who want to opine feel free. I'm all for ideas on that.

I like your dehorn on the muzzle. I always hate doing that. You were smart and took the front sight off.

Yeah, the whole gun got blasted so the sight needed to come off for sure.
FWIW, I wasn't super impressed with how the stock armory kote finish held up to wear and tear. Hopefully Cerakote holds up better.
I had to true up the round on top of the slide and a few other things too.
It looks real nice. Keep us posted on the finish. I like the way it looks now.

I've always done stainless guns in the past that ended up looking more or less like this. I'd do a final light blast finish on them then beat them up on the range. For this one I went with the carbon steel TRP so whatever I do it's gotta be finished with something. NP3 or hardchrome would look cool but I want something dark I think.
Here's a few of the other project guns I've done...
This one obviously wasn't nearly as aggressive a roundover job.

This one was pretty aggressive though...

I'm always grinding on Glocks too...

You're a braver man than I. Looks nice and a solid parts spec. I'd probably have high cut the FS, but that's just me. Maybe consider HH as a finish option.
Yea, I have NP3 'd guns fom Robar in phx. They do some dark colored finishes as well. Never NP3'd a pistol though. Only rifles and BCG's.

As big as my hands are it doesn't make any difference.
Nice job. About the only thing I could offer is I'd point up the checkering on the S&A MSH. That cast checkering isn't consistent with the front strap.

I was actually thinking of getting some checkering files for just that reason. I wanted to clean up the burrs on the machine cut checkering on the front strap as well.
May as well do everything right ;)

Very good choices , for custom parts. Since your pro craftsmanship ,is nearly meticulous; I' D LIKE THAT 1911 IN NP-3. Dark Ceracoat would not show off the exactness of your work.

I returned my cheaply cast S&A and got a very nice milled-from-bar-stock mainspring housing from Ed Brown. The difference in the checkering is phenominal.
not big on paint finishes myself. Have you looked at Ionbond?
Chris
your TRP came out great.. Nice Job..
I vote for Ionbond or Melonite..
here is a TRP i had Melonite treated.. very stupidly sold it..

I'm gonna do Cerakote in Graphite Black.
The outfit who actually developed Cerakote is local to me and when they quit applying coatings in house their lead coater started his own business right up the street.
He'll do my whole pistol for $150 with same day or at most next day turnaround provided I bring it to him completely disassembled.
I swung by Cerakote/NIC this morning on my way home from the VA and picked up some samples of colors I liked and I think the Graphite Black is gonna be the ticket.

Good choice and a reminder that chuck uses that color a lot including the "Colt 2011" stickied above.
Thanks...
Here's the last pic I took prior to dropping it off for coating.
I decided to undercut the frontstrap a bit and whatnot. I should have it back tomorrow from getting coated.

That really does look like a great melt job. I am looking forward to seeing the new Graphite Black coating.
Very good work! As others have said, you have much more courage and skill with a file than I do.

You know... If you get a set of nice needle files, and a bunch of wet/dry sandpaper in various grits starting with 220 and going on up to about 1200 you can't really screw it up too bad.
It helps that I was a machinist for years so I can sculpt metal with a file like most people sculpt clay or wood. But really if you just score some scrap high carbon steel from a machine shop (don't buy crap from a hardware store cause it's gummy and nasty) and practice with your needle files you can get really good before you start carving on your guns.
I've got a couple of bigger Nicholson files, flat ones and half rounds for hogging metal off and I use a sanding drum on my dremel occasionally.
A neat trick is to file file file... hit it with some sandpaper to even everything up so you can gauge your radius, then when you start filing again you'll be able to see exactly what you're doing.
Man I wish I had the balls and the skill to do that to my TRP. Looks great, can't wait to see the final product.
Look forward to seeing the after pics.

Honestly, I could have done it much faster if I'd trued everything up first instead of doing the blending, then deciding to true everything up because I didn't realize how out of true the flats were.
Next time I'll just surface grind or flat sand the flats and then radius everything and it'll be faster.
If anyone is curious about how to do any part of this stuff just ask.
