Well I finally did it. Picked up a SLR106UR for an SBR project. Just put the form in the mail today. Now the 6+ month wait begins. Still need to order some wood for her.

Here she is after a barrel shroud (could not stand the look of the barrel), CeraKote "H" series Graphite Black, removed the ribs and stippled the lower handguard, decreased the ribs on the upper handguard, and refinished the furniture in sponge camo (OD, Tan, and Black)

Nice blaster, I always wanted a 106 to try out but I like my x39 47s. Run it hard and come back with a range report when that unnecessary barrel length has been rid of.

I had a 106CR and a 106UR. I sent off stamps for both back when the wait was only about 1.5 months. Then I went and shot them. Both rifles would not function reliably. There were all sorts of malfunctions. Multiple trips back to Arsenal didn't solve the problem. They eventually refunded me most of my money for both rifles. It turns out that the problem with both these rifles had to do with a manufacturing tolerance issue. The bottom of the Bulgarian 106 series bolts are wide when compared to other AK 223Rem (5.56x45) bolts. See the picture below.

On both my rifles, the bottom left of the bolt would sometimes contact the right rear of the left magazine feed lip. This would interrupt the cycle of the action causing all sorts of problems.

Obviously, I had some bad luck here as all their 106 series rifles are not having this problem. Here's my advice. Shoot your 106UR prior to sending off for the stamp. Put a bunch of ammo through it of various types. Examine the rear of the magazine feed lips where the bolt would just pass through them. If you see evidence of the bolt contact at this point, then you have an issue. I'm seriously not trying to rain on your parade here, I just want to help you avoid the crap that I went through after I made the assumption that both rifles would work 100% out of the box. If you need more detailed info or links to videos, I'll be glad to provide them. However, the bottom line is just shoot it a bunch prior to sending off for the stamp and see how it does. And then let us know.

Thanks for the info. I had heard they had some problems with the 106's. But never got the info first hand from someone who ran into probs. I ran 25 down the pipe into the trap without problems with circle 10 bulgarian mags. Its going to the range this weekend when we go proof fire some Saiga conversions. If it gives me any probs down the road we will just fix it in house.

I would have done the same, except that they couldn't be fixed. Given the width of the bolt and the distance between the magazine feed lips, there just isn't any room for error. If the receiver isn't perfectly square and/or the rails are allowing for too much slop as the carrier travels, the bolt will contact the magazine. Perhaps one could reduce the width of the bottom of the bolt, but that was beyond my ability and definitely beyond the ability of the monkeys at Arsenal. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. I'd sure love to have a 5.56x45 chambered krink.

I wish the wait time was still 1.5 months. Our last one took almost 8 months once the ATF had it. Were at 5 months on a Tula 5.45 build. They are way understaffed now. I can see registering class 3 stuff but if its legal in your state for SBR's and suppressors you should be able to just walk in and buy them.

Now I have to decide to go with traditional wood furniture or just stipple and refinish the plastic

Went out and ran some 55 gr and 62 gr ball out of her yesterday. Ran like a champ. Brought her into the shop and dunked her in the solivent tank and took part of the finish off. So I went ahead broke her down, cleaned up the trigger, blasted her down, shot some GB CeraKote on her and she is in the oven now. Its gonna be a bit before I get some wood furniture so I may play around with the plastic on her now. I will post some pics when I put her back together.
