I'm sure this topic has been covered previously, but with the current events and the lack of equipment it's impossible to find FL dies for 223, much less 300BLK. I finally found some FL RCBS dies for the 223, but all I can find are SB dies for the 300BLK. Most people prefer FL dies for the 223 and have not had any problems, but from my understanding, brass reloaded with SB dies can only be reloaded once since they set the shoulder to minimum specs? I have yet to use the FL dies, so I can't say how they cycle, but a lot of folks use them, so I shouldn't see a problem.

Are there any other disadvantages to SB dies in an AR? To FL dies? I did find some FL Lee dies & SB RCBS dies both in stock for the 300BLK, but I would prefer the FL RCBS dies.

Any insight?

I've never tried a small base die for AR ammo. I can't see why there's be any downside though... maybe just more case lube sensative.

If choosing 300BLK dies, I would definitely go with small base as insurance for reliability. All Dillon rifle dies are small base, you'll find many thousands of reloaders using them. BTW they have them in stock.

All Dillon rifle dies are small base,

Is that so? If so then I have to say I've never NOT used small base dies.

I got my die set almost 15 years ago and didn't know what they were then... I'm only using the carbide resizer still.

That's cool. I got my dies from my Pops as the very first purchase in reloading. Never thought about it really.

hmm, interesting.

what about taper crimp? my 223 dies are standard i believe, but again, i havent used them yet so i dont know about reliability. what exactly do taper crimp dies do? im new to reloading rifle rounds and so far, its fairly different from pistol reloading, but im learning and doing my research!

these are the 223 dies i have:

Taper crimp dies do as the name states. The close the mouth (crimp) of the case around the bullet with a taper. The are no SB taper crimp dies. The amount of crimp is adjusted by lowering the die over the case within the toolhead bore. The lower the more crimp applied.

These are advertised as taper crimp:

what are the advantages of taper crimp vs roll crimp vs standard?

FWIW, these dies will be used in converting 5.56 brass to 300BLK... will the SB vs FL dies make that much of a difference?

Depends on your rifle. SB are generally 0.001 smaller.
